Stuff I learned in Elementary School in the 70s

I went to elementary school in the 70s - here are some things I learned about socially and in the classroom:
1- some of our founding fathers owned slaves. This was never a secret.
2- Americans fought on both sides of the civil war
3- Hanging out with people who have the chicken pox was good, bc you can get the chicken pox over with
4- love your neighbor as yourself
5- clean up your mess
6- taking naps is good
I think the only one of these lessons that made it into 2020 is number 6. We are treating all this other stuff like it’s new information. And I just cannot understand why suddenly everyone is so pissed off.
The 70s was a completely turbulent time. I was oblivious to it bc I was in elementary school and my parents were Ward and June Cleaver. But surely there was more to be pissed off about then. The Vietnam War was senseless and ended in a stalemate. The President was impeached for spying on the Democrats (cough). Carter showed up and there was economic malaise and these long gas lines. Cities were crime ridden. There was complete distrust in every American institution. And everyone was confused. Except me. I was 6 years old, living in a small town, watching Batman reruns. shite was pretty good.
For those of you who weren’t in elementary school in the seventies, do things just seem worse now bc I’m no longer a child?I just cannot for the life of me figure out what we have to be so pissed off about. We had record economic prosperity. And had basically gotten our asses out of all foreign wars, except Afghanistan. And we were almost out of that one.

The seventies is when it began with the school boards ruling for the taking of certain books out of elementary libraries.

Chicken pox parties used to be a thing. Get all the kids in the neighborhood over it as early as possible. The times have changed.

By pretty much every measure possible, there has been no better time to be alive in this history of the world than the last 10-20 years in the US. Hell, really, other than a couple of brief hiccups, the last 35.
Our "poor" are the fricking envy of about 4 Billion people on the planet. Our lives are absurdly easy compared to anything in history. We pretty much DEFINE the concept of 1st world problems.
Which, oddly, is exactly why everyone is fricking upset. Have you ever met a child who gets pretty much everything he wants, but not QUITE everything? He's an insufferable arse, isn't he?
Welp, let me introduce you to America. A nation of petulant children who have largely gotten all they asked for, so, now they want to burn the fricking place down because they didn't get EVERYTHING.

I’ve said this for years. Our “poor” have housing, food, health care, cell phones, cable, free education, cash payments, all paid for by the tax payer.

You should have paid more attention in school in the 70s.
Nixon wasn't impeached. He resigned.
Nixon didn't spy on Democrats. He faced impeachment for covering it up after learning about it.

I graduated in 79 and experienced the gas lines and the horrendous Carter years. It’s hard to say if those times would have been exploited the same way if we had social media and a news media hell bent on destroying the country like we do now? But since Carter was a Dem, he would have been given a pass regardless.

I went to school from 1972-1984 and it was Gods time in school! Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings with honeycomb cereal, freeze tag and riding my bike and playing in the woods until dusk.
My biggest concern was finding enough coke bottles on the side of the road to scraped up enough nickels for a candy bar or game of space invaders.
I pictured 2020 as some kind of futuristic paradise with flying cars and robot butlers, not a bunch of spoiled brats throwing a temper tantrum and destroying cities.

We lost. Notice how Vietnam is communist? Notice how there was a "cleansing" shortly after we left. The image of the Huey leaving our embassy is not a give up moment.
They why can be debated but it was solidly a "L".
