The title makes no sense.

And reading the OP, I still couldn't figure what you're trying to say

Then he crashes and burns. That is why you are not letting him go back. A 9 year old needs to know he has someone in his corner that likes him. It's time.

Just because the kid is 9, doesn't mean he's a wasted soul you dense frick.

A kid I grew up with was adopted by a family down the road. He was originally supposed to stay with them short term, and people in the system said he was destined for prison because of his attitude and his destructive behavior. They were able to obtain guardianship and when his mom got out of jail, decided to let him stay there and she visited every once in a while because she was in and out of rehab. Kid was two years behind in school, had attitude problems etc. After being in a wholesome family environment and going to counseling he caught up and flourished. He now has a PhD in Physics. But you're right, by the age of 9, the kid is wasted goods... stupid frick.

First, please fix your title. You do mean brining and not being right?

That’s really going to put the kid in a pickle.

Seriously, after you spend a few days with the kid you will be able to determine if he is smart and uneducated or dumb and uneducated (not being mean, serious). If the kid is smart, start bringing him up to speed, and gradually explain to him (in 9 year old words) that he doesn't have to be a product of his environment, he can "escape" if he decides to, via education and good decisions. Offer to guide him with advice forever (particularly after he goes home). Chances are he does not have a stable or ethical figure in his life, and 9 years old is the perfect age to plant the seed of success in his head. You have a great chance of saving that kid from a bleak future.

You can talk math and use Baseball math to maybe get him interested in math. There's a lot on line about helping kids with math. Read a book about the history of a baseball player. a page a night.

You can give him things his sibs can't take away: knowledge and interest.

Also read Hillbilly Elegy. Then reread it.

You never really know which moments in a kids life are defining. Good luck and be patient.
