Lost art or a symbol of passed times?

Symbol of gatekeeping
Why would I want to go back to crank starting a car from the front when I have electric ignition.

More just bragging rights that nobody cares to hear about.
Many of my cars have been manual.

Going the way of the dinosaur in the States for the most part. Still popular in Europe from the folks I communicate with on-line.
The best thing about stick shifts is most of the carjackers today can't drive a stick and leave the car behind after they realize they are in over their heads.

For performance driving they are grossly inferior to what's available today in the dual clutch offerings.
They are fun, but it's also wayyyyyyyy overhyped.
Open roads where I can drive aggressively? That's awesome. Running errands and commuting to work? I can live without it.
Some people act like daily driving a manual is some sort of nirvana. I don't get that.

I think of it as theft protection

Lost art. Saved my arse during the ice storms in Birmingham several years ago. Being able to feather the clutch while in 4 low and not go sliding around was great.

Learned to drive in a ‘63 Chevrolet Biscayne three speed on the column.
Don’t think they even make cars like that any more. maybe trucks.
My wife and none of my children can drive a standard.

Both. With the advent of streetable single and double plate sequential boxes and even wicked fast torque converter trannies in performance cars, the last bastion of three pedal usefulness evaporated. You don't even see them often in stripped econoboxes.
While there is nothing quite as satisfying behind the wheel (save road head) as linking several perfect heel-toe downshifts the truth is a three pedal car is slower in almost every situation. You simply will not find a manual clutch in any racing series that allows a sequential dog box of any sort.

I drove stick forever. I bought a hybrid in 2008 and that is my first non-manual car. I have no clue what to do with my left foot and right hand... And it's been two years

Lost art. There are lots of manual shift cars especially those little sporty turbos. Many kids today learned on automatics.

Sometimes (highways, mountains) I will use the manual shift mode for fun.

I drive a stick, because I choose to.
It makes driving more fun.
It is amazing how many people do not know how to drive them now. Once my Jeep was in the shop and I had to go back it out of the bay when done, since the one guy who could drive stick was at lunch.

It isn’t nearly as hard as it is made out to be. In fact it is fairly simple, just no one uses it because the engine computers of 2019 can control the gearbox better than someone driving a 4-speed ford pinto.

I drove a vehicle with a sequential box as a weekend toy.
Honest answer, more of a pain in the dick than anything else.

I’ve driven a stick shift for most of my life—had one auto for a few years. There are a lot of joys with a stick that you don’t get with an auto. On the other hand, it sucks balls when you get stuck in traffic—especially on the interstate. Being constantly in the clutch is horrible.
