Bring this back up in like September and maybe. It's just too damned hot right now. I actually started lifting weights this weekend because I realized I hadn't been doing anything lately due to it just being too hot to run or go ride my bike.

I'm in. The LA will be iffy w a baby due Nov 1. But I'll keep up w training and at least do a self-marathon Jan 20. If I can get an in-law over then I'll do it and go see bro in LA.

Status:
After being totally sidelined w a knee injury etc, I've been running again for right at a year.

I'm up to 18 miles (slow). 24-hour record is 27 miles. Those are hot, humid and hilly, so I feel decent about a January marathon if I keep up current training arc.

Pre-excuses:
I'm still tweaking my fuel system with fat adaptation. And want to make sure I avoid another knee issue. Never had surgery (PT-diagnosed meniscus tear but never got MRI).

I'll start formulating a training plan tonight. I'm doing the MT Snowbowl 15k August 4. 2200 ft straight up (and then same back down). So I need to account for that.

I am eyeing a full at Biloxi in December, starting my program in mid/late August

I will be doing a 20 mile loop for a 100 mile relay on a trail race during the program and will probably do Ainsleys for the half at LA

So sure, I would be in on it

i'm going to train for a half in February though some ranch land with creeks and swampy areas. last year it was 38 degrees and raining.

should be fun so i'm down to keep this as a log

you a stravaer?

for starters, i ran a 7 miler last night on trails with some decent inclines and tried gels for the first time. i couldn't believe the difference they made on my last 2-3 miles for energy increase. i don't plan on many more of those till the fall.

I’m in.

Shooting for a November 10th marathon in Nashville. It’s my first but I’ve run two halfs this year. I’m at 15-20 miles a week the past two months so I have some base building to do. My long run right now is a max 9 miles with a few stops needed along the way.

We just had a baby last week, so it might not be feasible but I’m going to give it a go. Official training plan starts next week.

I’ll join in. I’m already signed up for a full marathon on 11/11 in Las Vegas. I’ve run 9 halfs but this will be my first full. My training looks like:

Monday: push workout
Tuesday: short run/tempo
Wednesday: medium run
Thursday: pull workout
Friday: short run
Saturday: rest or active rest
Sunday: long day

Great idea. The training is the part I hate the most. I’m so tired of running up and down the gravel part of the levee. I run off-road/ trail races so my trainnng is mostly the gravel portion of th levee or Clark creek in Mississippi. I’ll run streets if it’s been raining and wet.

My race is late August so My training will be over in a few weeks, but this these would be good to follow.

Procrastination ramblings:

I think I'm just going to go sort of helter skelter to train for this Aug 4 mountain 15k and then start the marathon plan.

After that, I'll need to rework my HR zones, threshold, VO max, and as I mentioned figure out the best way to do this with my keto-ish diet.

Half marathon distance is fine with just my homemade electrolyte drink and some form of MCT or exogenous ketones (although I can do it with just electrolytes--but very slow).

A full is going to require fuel. Maybe carb cycling, super starch etc. I'm Researching crazy Ben Greenfield stuff. He's such a quack on some stuff that it's hard to filter.

The 15k training should give me a good base for the marathon. The most gain I've run in a race is 1700, rolling over a half marathon. But those were in Aspen with zero time to adjust from near-sea level, so my goal was to just survive.

I really don't know how to train for 2200ft gain over 4.65 miles (and then same loss for second 4.65), other than just finding some elevation-change in Atlanta to run. Fortunately, max elevation for that race is under 8k, so altitude is not much of an issue.

Humidity is sapping me.
I'm normally in MT all summer, but had/have to be in South most of June through July. I got some nice elevation-gain runs in out there in June but have been mostly in pretty flat areas since.

Anyway, I'm back in hilly Atlanta now. I think I'll do some Stone Mtn, Kennesaw Mtn, and maybe Blood Mtn. I may make myself do some treadmill incline but I hate that and it is hard on knees etc.

If it isn't storming, I'm going to do a long burner before sunset this evening--83 w 71 dew point. Shouldn't be too miserable. I'll post results.

I just saw this thread. I'll throw in my 2 cents.

I'm in the middle of my goal for 2018 to run 1000 miles. It's been going OK, although I'm getting worn down with it this time of year, due to the heat and humidity. Currently, I'm at a little over 600 miles to date, so I am still on pace.
My ultimate goal is to be ready for the Mercedes Half Marathon in Birmingham in February. With all this extra running I have been doing, I may find myself enter the full marathon instead.
I've only run one full, and it wasn't a pleasant experience, since I became electrolytes low badly at the end of the race. I was hurting for days.
However, I want to ramp up some distances, therefore I may be better prepared this year.
I also would like to enter the Tuscaloosa half marathon, which is normally in March, but there are rumors of it not occurring next year. Therefore, I'd need to find another race.

I'm in. I haven't run a marathon since Jan 2016. Since then the miles have been few and far between. I gained a lot of weight in that time frame.
Started training last week and going low carb diet until the miles start to add up enough for it to matter.

Marathon: Walt Disney World Marathon 1/13/19. Since I am nearly starting from zero, my marathon goal is sub 4 hours.

For Disney races you need to submit a proof of time race for coral placement, if not your in the back. Must submit by October 9 or 10th. I need races that are 10 milers, or a half. Next one up is a 10 mile night time race in August and my second attempt to improve it Oct 7.

Hope to get caught up in this thread. Best of luck to everyone.

Hey OP, how about keeping a list of usernames and goal races they have?

If we're recording upcoming plans,
For now, I'm for sure going to run the Mercedes half, debating on whether or not to run the full. Talk me into it, or out of it.

Race is 2/10/19 Birmingham AL

There are some other potential races:

Magic City (Birmingham) Half marathon, 11/18/18
Tuscaloosa half marathon, TBA, usually in March

add me to the list.

i had planned on doing the Soldier Marathon in Columbus GA again but will instead be doing Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham (had to push back start of training do to some health problems). I will be following the Hal Higdon intermediate 2 plan. Building a base (25-30 miles weekly) until the official plan starts in early october.

I’m going to reluctantly post that I’ve signed up for the Big Easy Half on 11/17. Haven’t done one in a few years.

Disney Marathon on 1/13 as well. Actually doing Dopey Challenge #3. Currently doing the Jeff Galloway training program and mixing in elliptical and weights on off days as well as a beach volleyball during the week. From now till Jan I’ll try and follow a strict diet as well - tough with Football season coming up.

Going to run a few half’s between now and then. Gulf Coast for sure and maybe Old Man River and Big Easy.

Good luck to all. I’m sure you are like me and anxiously awaiting the first less humid Saturday morning.

Looks like I may be joining in on the fun.. wife and I will be doing the St Jude half marathon Dec 1, 2018 in Memphis. I’ve never raced anything over 10k. The next 17 weeks are going to be rough I’ve only been lifting for the past 6 months so I think adding back running is going to be a shock. Going to lift and then hit a 4 Mile run after and see where I am.

Let’s talk cadence and form.

I average around 165 steps per minute. I know the 180 number isn’t foolproof and could lead to inefficient running and injuries. However, when I see videos of myself running, I look as slow as I am.

My strides are small, and my knees don’t raise up very high. Short, choppy, stubby steps that don’t turn over very quickly. I’ve copied some fast runners on the trail and have noticed that they are always running at a noticeably faster cadence than me.

How can I improve this? Adding in 5 extra steps a minute seems like a tedious, impossible task. Are there workouts designed to improve cadence?
