How competitive is ncaa track and field? Not all top 10 finishes are made the same in collegiate sports.

What is sad is that this is probably a serious inquiry, don’t have kids

I get your point, but shaver has beaten pat henry multiple times over the last 5 years. and that's with Henry having substantially more resources.

Shaver reminds me of what I think of Maineri; there are better coaches out there but he's still good.

The point that I am making is that we were dominate and are not anymore . Not saying that we are not competitive. It like John Wooden or Saban being satisfied with being 8th.

Was watching the baseball game on ESPN 2 and then some track and field interview of LSU track girls said they were National Champs?

Why does this matter? Football. Having the nation’s most dominant track program by far was great for recruiting speed/skill players in football. Wanna get invited to the combine with the best possible chance of getting an elite 40 yard time once you’re there? LSU’s track program mattered (and still does) to football.

How many skill players at LSU run track?
You’re making something seem big, when in reality, Track has helped get very few football players.

Or you could look one state west to Pat Henry who has way more resources now than he had at LSU and isn’t winning nearly as much. Did he become a worse coach or did the sport change?

You do realize that what Pat Henry was doing at LSU happened more than 20 years ago, right? 20+ YEARS AGO! After the women won that 11th-straight national championship in 1997, you want to guess how many NCAA Outdoor titles Pat Henry won in his final 7 seasons as the head coach? The answer is 2. Still a great return, but even Pat Henry didn't win the NCAA title while at LSU every single season once other programs started putting way more resources into the sport.

That's where the sport is now. You see the likes of Oregon, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Kentucky, USC and probably many more putting way more resources into the sport of track and field than LSU does at present.

The fact is that there is WAY more parity in the sport than there was 20+ years ago when Pat Henry was winning all those national championships. People like you who can't realize this just want to have an axe to grind.

Oh, and Dennis Shaver has won a national championship while he's been the head coach at LSU and consistently has the program in the trophy positions (Top 4) just about every single season. Considering the (lack of) support he and the program get from the administration, that's a great return. And I still believe he and his staff will be able to bring another title back to LSU again one day.

This weather hurt them worse than any other teams because they had zero field events points.

Lol. Who was the AD so cheap and jealous he wouldn’t keep an all-time great coach who wanted to stay and hired the current coach?

This isn’t Pat Henry solid.

Checks the final women's standings and sees that the unbeatable Pat Henry leads the Texas A&M women to 19th place with a paltry 15 points. NINETEENTH PLACE! That is 13 places and 26 points BEHIND our women. But Coach Shaver is certainly nowhere near capable to have LSU competing against Pat Henry!

People like you and Gheauxst Writer or whatever his name is can get pumped. Pat Henry clearly can't even live up to his level anymore and is past it.

Deuces you douches.

I agree. Pat Henry was bad arse. Shavers is like Les. He just can’t get his team to perform at the top of their game on a steady basis

Believe it or not, there is a lot more parity these days. Track and field has become much more popular over the years.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I just want LSU athletics to be successful

I think we are spoiled with what we experienced before with Pat Henry. That type of success is not realistic today its not. Kind of like Bertman's run with the baseball team in the 90's is not realistic these days in college sports its not

College Athletics has so much more parity these days than it did a decade or two ago. For all sports!!!!

Is Shaver the best coach out there? Probably not but he field consistent top 10 teams every year and is a good coach. Today's track and field program may be a step down compared to some of Henry's teams in the past but they are still very good.

Not saying there shouldn't be accountability or improvements within the program but this thread makes this sound like we aren't even competitive or respected nationally which simply isn't true

Of the sports that need accountability and changes on campus, this isn't one of them

The women hoops program is the place to probably start

A few thoughts.

One major aspect that is often overlooked. LSUs jumping team and the lack of coach Boo.(next part is opinion) Boo respected Henry. I don't think he(Boo)walked away because he was over looked for the head coach position. I think it had to do a lot more with how he respected and was respected by Henry and how that was not the case with Shaver.(again this is opinion though I have heard some specific incidences) While I think Lane(new jump coach) has done well, Boo was at his peak and set the bar for jumps coaching.

Pat Henry has won 9 more national championships since going to Texas a&m, 5 men's and 4 women's.Most recently In 2017. Also worth noting he's had 19 other top 5 finishes. A&M was barely on the map prior to Henry.

Bertmans fault Henry is gone.
