it's just not worth the price, plain and simple.

After living in or near BR all my 51 years I've come to realize there is no good BBQ in BR and probably will never be. At least not compared to Texas and other known places for excellent BBQ. When I'm in California, which is very often, I'm skeptical as hell when I see a "Cajun" or "Creole" type food restaurant. I've tried a few and just like the swing and miss of this joint in BR those are the same there. Just my opinion on this. Great review. Likely will keep me from wasting money there.

Well to be fair you aren’t going to find much better bbq in a lot of Southern cities. It just has its regions like we have South Louisiana cuisine. I don’t eat boiled crawfish or gumbo in San Antonio or Austin for the same reasons you mention above.

I’ve never had a problem with their sides. I’ve always thought they were great. Entrees are way too pricey for their quality. Just makes you feel ripped off.

I honestly could eat those chips and pickles all day, though.

It's extremely overrated plain and simple. I'm not sure I understand people's fascination with this place because I've gone twice and have been underwhelmed every time. Until they make some changes, I will not go back. Amazing to me how badly Baton Rouge fails at BBQ.

Looks like I am in the minority, but as a major foodie, I thought I would share my experience.

I went once with my wife for dinner and had fantastic service, like we talked about how good the service was on the ride home.

We had the duck eggrolls for starter with the complimentary chips and pickles. It was simple, delicious and I really liked the savory dipping sauce.

I ordered the beef rib special, which came with braised veal risotto. This was exceptional - Huge portion, perfectly cooked beef ribs and the risotto was lick the plate perfect.

Wife had a smoked chicken salad. Salad was HUGE, smoked chicken had good flavor but was served cold on the salad. Why the frick anyone would want cold smoked chicken is a mystery to me, so that left me scratching my head.

Overall it was a good experience, and we left impressed with the food.

Prices are a bit high, I will say that.

Yeah like I said earlier, I'm going to make a point to try their dinner menu before completely writing them off. So far their BBQ and Brunch menus bombed. Their dinner menu looks the most intriguing.

I am resurrecting this thread because I just returned from my family’s first trip to BRQ. It still sucks in 2024. Not sure how and why the parking lot is packed all the time. That’s why we finally went to try it. The bbq items are sub par. Ribs are dry, pulled chicken is bland and the brisket is ok. Mac and cheese is not restaurant quality. Everything just is not that good. My husband’s steak was so dry and tough. Really. We are not going back to try it again. I give it a 2024 NOPE. Still perplexed at how busy it is and the good reviews online.

Place should be awesome, but is just mediocre. Last time I went, you nailed the review. Looked good, but no flavor.
The Carrot Cake is awesome though

It’s sad when the best thing they serve are their chips (they’re fire though)

ordered some kind of Benedict from the brunch menu. It was 2 biscuit halves, with ham I believe and ONE poached egg kind of set on top of both of the biscuits that were pushed together... I had to ask the waitress if it really was supposed to only have one egg....she replied yes, thats how it is.

That’s bad.

just mediocre
I have been twice to meet others at their request and this was my opinion. It was so unremarkable I don't remember what I ordered and would not go there again (unless invited and just wanted to visit).

Looking at the down votes on my post. Sorry, but the steak was like a rubber tire. Inedible. I was embarrassed for the kitchen. Also my baby back ribs were also an embarrassment to their declaration of being “award winning”. They were hard, chewy and the layer of bark on top was so overdone and dry that I don’t think a Doberman could have struggled through it. Not worth the time or money charged for a sub par meal. $148 not including tip. That’s all.

One year for my birthday my wife got a carrot cake to go because it's my favorite. Tasted like it had been in the fridge uncovered with BBQ foods for a week. Imagine carrot cake with smoky BBQ flavor.
Manager told her that he'd make it right if she took down her negative review.
I agree with what's been said here. Don't know why it's always busy.

Brunch is probably the best thing they do.

Louisiana cannot do BBQ well unless you go to places like Gonzo's where you are going to arrive early before they run out of food. The problem I've always had with BRQ is that they advertise as a BBQ restaurant and they are incredibly mediocre at BBQ. However, the rest of their menu is great. It's disappointing that they use the name "BRQ" to sound like they serve traditional BBQ. You can go a block over and get Smoke Bayou for actual BBQ.

Truly there are only two reasons to go to BRQ IMO:

1. On your birthday, you get a free dessert. Their carrot cake is normally ~$17 but you can feed at least 8 people with one slice.

2. Happy Hour/lunch special pricing, is the only justifiable reason to spend money there.
