I think the argument was that Lafayette had good jobs outside of plants and engineering, one being medical. IMO, you can’t consider it a good job if you can literally move a state over and make a ton more money. At that point, you are staying for the location that you enjoy, not the good job.

This is a good question.
Let's say Vermillion Parish School board budget is roughly 100 million a year, but varies with sales tax revenue, meaning oil-related revenue is a pretty big deal.
Superintendent administers that budget to support 25 or so schools and several thousand employees, supposedly under a ton of scrutiny, including legislative auditors.
Comparatively, Vermillion parish schools score pretty well.
How much should the superintendent make?

The board was locked at a 4/4 vote. Since the passing of Mr. Luddy Herpin, the Board voted 4/3 to appoint Luddy's replacement. This was the 5th yes vote needed for the contract extension raise
I think this is what really got people pissed off. The school board had been locked up on all the major issues. One of the board members fell sick and missed an extended period of time. The side that lost the sick persons vote wanted to wait for him to return. The side that now outnumbered the other side wanted to vote.
Some things ended up being voted on, with one side now basically having total control of the board.
Fast forward to now.....
The sick board member ended up dieing not long ago. His replacement became a big ordeal, because the side who had the majority of the votes appointed someone they can control. So now they have a 5-3 edge.
Its all pretty shitty politics, by some crappy people (not all of them). You would think people in this position would be able to take each issue separately and vote on what is best. But instead they vote against each other out of spite. And then we wonder why Louisiana education is among the worst in the nation. Like everything else, it starts at the very top.

I'm not outraged at his salary. I am upset about the way that vote and that meeting were handled.

TDCline's showing his insecurities again.

Idk where everyone is at on this conversation, but even scoring well and being such a large parish, I think it’s still hard to justify giving yourself a raise when the teachers have had to make cuts and increase their class size at the same time. Now, I get logically, raising just the Superintendents salary is a lot less money than giving every teacher in the parish a raise. BUT, I think it comes down to the principle of the matter in their minds. And honestly, if I was in a business and we were bleeding for money and having more work piled on us but no raise for years and my boss decided he’d just give himself a raise, I’d be pissed.
Regardless, I give it a few weeks before one of the teachers accuse him of sexual harassment now.

What makes it even worse is that in instances like this where a board member dies prior to the ending of their term, often times a family member takes their position until the election. The passed board member's son offered to take his position and was told he couldn't because he wasn't in the district, so his wife offered to take his position and Fontana and his ilk voted no and put in someone, like you said, they can control.

What's insecure about what I said? You seem too blinded by denial to admit the issues surrounding Louisiana.

Yeah. And its really this that has everyone so worked up, and not as much the issue at hand. The issue of the raise is just a reason for the other side to speak up THIS meeting. Just so happened it ended with an arrest of a teacher and is now taking a life of its own. This has been going on during multiple meetings though, just minus the arrest.
Its Fontana's side, versus LeBeoufs side. Fontanta is using corruption to grow the numbers on his side, thus control the board. This won't change until the next election, which then they will be stuck back at a grid lock.

The real problem hasn’t been mentioned. This guy Peyou has been in the school system. With this raise he now gets to retire at his highest salary. One board member passed away, maybe two more have decided to not run again. Therefore, this new contract/raise was pushed before members leave.
This guy will retire with a large retirement salary and vermilion will be on hook for 3 or 4 retired superintendents.

The problem is government jobs where "administrators" get to retire at an early age, with huge benefits and retirements, for LIFE ! Look at the NOLA Sewerage and Water Board, where it barely functions with pumps that don't work and leaky pipes and they have several former "presidents" retired at over $ 170,000.00 per year FOR LIFE. It's time to cut government jobs in HALF and make them work till age 67 and have at least 35 years experience or NO RETIREMENT FOR YOU !!!!!!!!!

It's pretty ugly optics, especially now with a teacher who challenged it hitting the deck in cuffs.
No comment on the marshal detaining the teacher. I am 50-50 on how that went down. I am sure he will face some discipline for PR reasons if nothing else.

The person who made the phone call to the police was school board member Sara Duplechain. She called the police at 6:28 p.m. and issued a complaint against school board member Anthony Fontana. Duplechain issued a statement to the Meridional about what occurred. “After Thursday nights meeting, I walked out of the Charles Campbell building to see Anthony going on and on about what just happened to Stacy Landry and a few others. I asked Anthony to please stop and enough already, it’s enough! He turned toward me and yelled to get out of his face. Calling me a liar and continued to yell at me, when he raised his arm, my husband yelled ‘don’t you dare.’ That’s when he turned toward my husband and got in his face and told him not to start with him because he would put him in jail. Chris Hebert pulled Anthony away and, Anthony left. I did call the Abbeville Police Department to make a formal complaint.
IWHI and kick Fontana's arse for her.
