Jeep Grand Cherokee
Base model is RWD, 4WD as an option, decent room and heterosexual males drive them rather than a RAV4 or a CRV.
Entry level (Laredo) is cheap and comes with a decent warranty, they'll tow OK, and you can outfit it to actually stack stuff on top of it.
Avoid Mitsubishi, I wouldn't get the Mazda or a Nissan, GM's small SUV offerings look like shite until you get to the Acadia and its significantly higher prices than a base Jeep GC.
Ford? Explorer maybe?

I'm seeing a few plus comments for Subaru and Mazda. Nothing on Nissan, mixed positives (mostly) for RAV and CRV. And as expected not much for Hyundai/Kia, although they are ok enough. Mitsubishi pluses a surprise. As I said on OP, no American makes will be considered. So, we're going to look first at the (admittedly less than exciting) RAVs and/or CRVs. If not impressed in person then immediate addition of Mazda, Nissan and/or Subaru into the search mix.

Here's another vote for Subaru Outback or Forrester.
I think it's hard to argue against buying a Subaru.
My family has always been Toyota/Honda people, but we've been converted by the quality of Subaru.
I have a '13 Outback. Averages 26 MPG combined and have hit 31 MPG hwy.
It has great reliability (bought it new, have only had routine maintenance done so far at 92k miles) and holds its value very well. Decent warranty, not the best, but nobody I know has had to have any work done under warranty.
Better ground clearance than a Jeep, with the best AWD on the market. The thing grips the road really well in all conditions (but the stock tires suck, so gotta upgrade if you buy). It scoffs at loose gravel and really loves to drive on dirt.
Lots of interior space for storage thanks to the lengthy wagon style and folding rear seats. I also have an '86 Toyota truck and the Outback almost has more storage than the toyota's bed. Ample head and legroom for driver and passengers. I'm 6'4" and have more than enough leg room in any seat, even the back. Great visibility all around. The A,b,c pillars do not block vision much at all- and a lot less than other vehicles in its class.
My only complaint is the location of the hazard light switch. It's right in front of the gearshifter, so sometimes my giant fingers will hit it on accident as I put it in park. Oh, the shite stock tires too.
Best part about it? Perfect crash ratings.

We were in the market for the same two. We ended up going RAV4 for my wife because it was just a much better deal I was able to get. Don't think you can go wrong with either though.

If you are in South La, Russell Zay at Hampton Toyota was great to work with.

Are you worried about American design or build quality? The North American version of the CRV has been assembled in Ohio since 2007, the North American version of the RAV4 is assembled in Canada.
I had an '04 CRV that was a reliable vehicle...but little things kept going wrong with it...back then they were either assembled in Japan or the U.K. Mine was a U.K. version...several of the components that failed (i.e. door locks) were different on the U.K. model than the Japan assembled model (even though both versions were sold in the US with no differentiation other than the serial number).
If you can get a Japan assembled RAV4 or CRV, either will be fine.
