Look at the last post in the other river thread. It looks like both spillways will be opening.

River is set to crest at 17' in mid January. At 20' it will over top the levees in New Orleans..

It certainly looks like they're both opening soon.

They open it if the river flow gets to 1.5 million cubic feet per second at Red River.

A stakeholder meeting has been scheduled for January 6 and/or 7 in Morganza at the 911 center on the 6th(6-9) and at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium on the 7th(10-1).

General statement:
quote:

While the flood fight continues in the upper reaches of the MR&T footprint, we are somewhat in a hold and monitor phase with regard to the potential activation of the Bonnet Carré and Morganza spillways.

On BC:
quote:

Based on NWS forecasts we are facing a likely operation of the structure in the near future, though at this time the date is hard to pinpoint. The trigger could be reached as early as this weekend or get pushed back into early next week. We should have a firm grip on this by the time of your meeting on Thursday. As of yet, we have not received an official recommendation to operate the structure from the New Orleans District commander.

On Morganza:

quote:

If NWS forecasts hold, the river will approach the triggers for opening the structure sometime next week. We have a visit scheduled to the Morganza structure as part of your meeting on Thursday. At this point, we do not anticipate an official recommendation for operating the structure prior to your visit, though a shift in the NWS forecast could change that.

Sidebar question, did not want to start a separate thread...

Why would anyone build a home in this area that is going to be flooded every 5-10 years? Do they have so much money they can afford it? How do they get loans to do this?

Haven't checked into this thread in a while. Wtf is going on with people Bunch of bickering hens in here. And on the OB no less

Thread needs to be anchored and a new one started without the pms additude. This one is practically useless for information.

Oh, and iirc, ScottieP actually makes a living by monitoring river levels and that type of shite. Was even on the news here a while back. Big ol boy.

If I'm reading that table right RRL should crest on 1/18 at 62 which is about 18 inches lower than 2011. That would be great. Less water is better than more water.

Excerpts from the latest memo:

quote:

- The NWS lowered the forecasted crest at Vicksburg by 0.5 ft to 52 ft on the gauge and at Natchez by 1.0 ft to 58 ft on the gauge.. The crest in the Red River Backwater area (Acme) was also adjusted downward to 48.5 feet on
18 Jan. Furthermore, the Red River at has crested at Alexandria.

-The lowered crests at those locations, however, will not translate into enough of a flow reduction at New Orleans to pass the water safely without stressing the levees in that region. With this in mind, MG Wehr approved Col. Hansen's recommendation to open the Bonnet Carré Spillway. The current schedule calls for an opening on Sunday, Jan 10.

quote:

-The forecasts revisions did impact the situation at the Morganza Spillway.
MG Wehr was prepared to deliver a decision on operating the spillway, however, the forecasted triggers adjusted slightly backward on the calendar.
This afforded the opportunity to delay the decision until Friday. MG Wehr remains intent on operating the structure within the Interim Water Control Plan, which includes staying below or at a 57' stage on the Morganza structure and exercising the 3 day soft opening. If current forecasts hold, the soft opening of the structure would begin on Tuesday, Jan 12. The forecasts tomorrow should help to provide more clarity.

quote:

The situation at Morgan City is dicey. If current forecasts hold, the potential operation of the Morganza Spillway could raise the predicted crest to 9.2 ft on the Morgan City gauge, almost one foot above the threshold for placement of the barge at Bayou Chene and height that would trigger significant flood fight activities at Morgan City..
