Use a magnet to erase the drive and that toss it in the trash

not quite that easy. a real degaussing magnet that will truly fubar a drive is about the size on an mri machine

just wipe it . lots of free utilities that arent too hard to operate.

In DC area, you can bring the PC to your local Best Buy and they will recycle the component parts. Agree with taking the HD out of the PC before dropping off. Destroy by whatever means provides the greatest joy.

I've never thrown away a hard drive. Even my old broken ones. Mostly because I hold out hope of being able to recover data from them but also for security.

The only true 100% way to destroy a hard drive is to physically take it apart and with a grinder, sand down each side of every disk.

Other ways of destroying them leave the possibility of recoverable sectors.

Google 'recover formatted drive' gives you all you ever needed to know. No computer forensics or advanced knowledge required at all.

That still wouldn't help 99% of the population. They'd need to know how to plug in the drive, for starters.

Pull the hard drive out. Also they have a recycling day a few times a year. Bring it to them.

You can fine numerous free programs on the Internet to "wipe" the drive. You do not simply want to erase, you went the data deleted and then written over.

I pulled the hard drive and memory and used it for target practice for my .357 magnum. Pretty fun. Threw the rest away.
