Not that it would make a huge difference, but I think we could be a little more strategic in the first few series of the year outside of that tournament weekend. Playing teams like VMI, Stoney Brook, Xavier, etc isn’t really helping you. In basketball, some coaches are good at manipulating RPI by scheduling beatable teams that will compete for their conference championship and a tournament bid.

Xavier was a super regional team last year and were on the verge of being Q1 wins going into the last weekend of the regular season. They played one of the hardest non-conference schedules in the country and that's even with late season rain outs against Kentucky and Oklahoma State.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with playing Xavier.

LSU should never be playing a school like VMI. It provides no benefit to us whatsoever, besides letting fans get excited that we got a bunch of hits and scored a bunch of runs off of some dude that throws 75mph.

Xavier was exactly that kind of team and I think they hoped Stoney Brook would be. The bigger problem for LSU is the overall weakness of midweek games, which is mostly dependent on state schools being better than they were this year.

I think next year is the first schedule that Jay will have done completely himself.
