My neighbor down the street (that I don't know) has a few and I love the look and one would go great in a certain spot in my yard.

Pros? Cons?

sounds like a good reason to meet your neighbor

Are you sure it’s Japanese?
I had a Chinese wisteria and it quickly took over too much space. I almost gave up trying to kill it, but eventually did.

I read up on this a while back because I've always liked wisteria, but don't like its ability to take over or "escape".

I don't think there is a real difference, at least genetically. The technical difference is that the ones that present in "tree" form are cultivars with heavier, more robust stems. Those cultivars still retain the attributes of the vine, though, and are capable of spreading in the same way (via runners). None of the invasive plant lists and trackers make any real distinction between tree and vine, and advise against planting either.

Asian Wisterias are definitely invasive and can easily get out of control, but there are some non-invasive types in the US.

Well, there's my answer! I'll go with something else.

Lots of people have allergies to wisteria. Mom could tell when her aunts’ wisteria was in bloom from about a half mile away. They definitely make my nose run like a faucet.
