Southwest 737 Max 8: LAX - HNL

If you’re flying a Max 8 the last thing I’d be concerned with is being able to charge my phone.

Can you keep a charger in a pocket you can easily access when opening the overhead bin without having to take your bag all the way out? I've done this on long flights when didn't want to have a bag under my feet. Then put it back up when done re-charging?

Thats my plan to have it packed in my carry-on if I can't confirm before I board. I use a soft sided carry-on with exterior pockets for that very reason and guess I'll just pack all of ours in that one exterior pocket.

Maybe a smaller charger like this may fit the bill?

I used these in Japan last month. Didn't carry a backpack anywhere and didn't want that bigger slab battery on me either. I never go full bore on a phone in flight so it may not have enough juice for you.

Ya, I've seen the case made that if those were US trained pilots neither one of those planes would have crashed.

Flew on 2 last week. One had them, the other did not. Southwest can’t guarantee the equipment until it leaves the gate.

The original problem with the MAX-8 is that when on autopilot, the sensors would incorrectly display the AoA of the airplane and forcing it pitch down on autopilot when it it was supposed to be pitched otherwise. Engine design also contributed to the sensors being off. That's been taken care of now.

TBH I get a little freaked out at the idea of being on a MAX-8 just because I know it's a relatively newer plane and I'd rather stick with the 700/800 planes, ESPECIALLY since I'll be flying out with SWA in two days, but you really have nothing to be concerned with in regards to that.

If it's SWA, they only fly 737s. Cost saving so they can streamline maintenance. You're also flying in the US.

I've flown the Max 8 a few times and don't really give it much thought except when I have almost 11 hours of travel with no in seat entertainment.

This is the most important part. Our FAA is extremely rigorous. So are the airlines. So are the pilot unions. One of the key rules of all three parties is that planes cannot leave the gate with known safety defects. I just doesn't happen. Even if the FAA and the airline ignored the rule, the ALPA guys will not.

What this means is that its 1000x harder to have an accident because no safety devices are missing, which can make a bad situation go way worse. See the Lion Air crash. They wrote up bad sensors repeatedly on that plane and ignored it repeatedly. You would absolutely never have that here.
