Many here have asked the significance of Ebrahim Raisi, and whether he is a figurehead or not.

The President of Iran holds significant executive powers but is subject to the overarching authority of the Supreme Leader. Here are the key powers and responsibilities of the Iranian President:

1. Executive Authority: The President is the head of the executive branch of the government, responsible for implementing the Constitution and overseeing the administration's functioning.

2. Domestic Policy: The President plays a major role in formulating and executing domestic policies, including economic, social, and cultural affairs.

3. Appointments: The President appoints the ministers and members of the cabinet, though these appointments must be approved by the parliament (Majlis).

4. Budget and Planning: The President is involved in drafting the national budget and development plans, which are then submitted to the parliament for approval.

5. Foreign Policy: While the Supreme Leader holds ultimate authority over foreign policy, the President is actively involved in diplomatic activities, negotiations, and representing Iran in international forums.

6. Legislation: The President can propose bills to the parliament and has the power to sign or veto legislation passed by the parliament. However, the veto can be overridden by the parliament.

7. Implementation of Laws: The President is responsible for ensuring that laws passed by the parliament are implemented effectively.

8. National Security: The President is a member of the Supreme National Security Council, which deals with national security and defense matters. However, decisions in this realm are heavily influenced by the Supreme Leader.

Despite these powers, the President's authority is limited by the Supreme Leader, who has ultimate control over the military, judiciary, and state media, and can override the President's decisions. The President is also subject to the approval and oversight of other political bodies, including the Guardian Council and the Expediency Discernment Council.

This would not deter Mossad from taking steps to remove him given his dedication to pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities.

So basically the same system we have.

Main difference is that the mullah here pulling the strings and DQing people from the ballot are hidden.

I wonder if this could be grounds for some kind of coup inside Iran by the religious leaders, to take full control of the government in Iran. I don’t really know how their government works, but maybe there’s some kind of balance that has kept the religious leaders in check. They seem to be more of the military wing of the country, so maybe they long for some kind of military dictatorship in the country? All speculation from my part.

Why do they need full control? They already have a hand chosen puppet as president who still reports to them.

That’s what I was wondering, how much control they really have in Iran. Didn’t know if the President and parliament were able to somehow keep the religious in check to an extent, because of certain laws or something.

It’s well-settled that Raisi was elected in a fraudulent election.

They have darn close to full control already. This has been a one-party, one-religion, extremist state since 1978 with very little dissidence tolerated.

Whoever the new president is, he will be handpicked from a group of people that have had their nose up the ayatollah's keester for decades now. No moderates here.

I wouldn't expect this changes much unless the attack was sponsored by Israel or the US.
