Did it port in Canada? And if so, did you need a passport?
I don't know shite about cruises

If your ship is docking anywhere outside the U.S. you’ll need a passport.

Me neither, but I'd like to go on a cougar cruise one day.

I did a Holland America from Seattle about 12 years ago and it was pretty good. I honestly can’t remember if we needed a passport for the stop in Victoria on the way back. I think so.

They typically leave from Seattle. I think every world traveler like yourself needs a passport, though!

You need a passport to get on the ship in the US

My cousin just returned from a Caribbean cruise. They made multiple stops out of the country, and he didn’t have a passport. He had a certified birth certificate and some other docs. I would recommend a passport, but it isn’t required, depending on the cruise.

Not being a smartass, but you can probably get some good info on the travel board.

Kind of. They actually checked our passport getting off the ship to make sure we had it. We were late getting back so we just showed our ship pass and walked through security.

There's an old law that requires foreign vessels to stop in a foreign country, which includes basically every cruise line. Unless you're going on a weird line, you're going to stop in Canada (or somewhere else, depending on where the cruise is going).
You pretty much need a passport to board, even if you don't plan on getting off the ship. Port customs are generally handled by the cruise line themselves which is a good thing for most as you don't have to wait in line with 3000 other people trying to get off in port. But the passport is necessary to board
ETA: Alaska is a wonderful cruise destination btw

Yes and it ported in Canada. Needed a passport.

I have been on two of them. Both started in Vancouver. And yes, you need a passport.
One time, on a cruise to the east coast of Canada, we were unfortunate enough to have been chosen at random to have to wake up at the crack of dawn and report to a customs table set up for a vetting process, otherwise they weren't going to let us off the ship.

Any cruise leaving and returning to the US requires a birth certificate and ID at the minimum. This is called a “closed loop circuit” within the Western Hemisphere, so there are a couple of proofs of citizenship that meet the requirement.
I always bring my passport. It just makes life easier.
If your trip starts or ends in Vancouver, then you’ll need a passport to get into Canada.
Despite what people say, always bring your passport with you when off the ship in a foreign country.

If youre stopping in Canada, the ship will check to see if you have a passport.
I've seen several passengers stranded because of DUIs before they boarded.

ETA: I've been to Canada, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Bahamas, etc without a passport on cruises. If you start and end in America, a passport is recommended but not required.
