Another thread about tipping, this one really is a gray area

I ordered $2000 worth of bulk meat and sides for a party, the person taking the order on the phone asked if I want to leave a tip for the people putting the meat into the containers and said 10% is normal without being asked. I asked if I could choose to make that decision when I picked up the containers and they said yes.
No one is serving me anything no one is setting up or delivering anything
I don’t see how in any world a tip is required or appropriate. The lady at the grocery store doesn’t ask me for a tip when she hand me my sliced deli meat
An I wrong here? OT let me know what I should do

No and I would mention something to management about being solicited on the phone when I pick it up.

So the people putting the meat into the containers...that sounds like a normal part of their job. Like the clerk at the grocery store bagging your purchases. I could see them warranting a tip if they unpacked all the stuff after delivering it, but 10% for doing what seems like is a consistent part of their everyday gig....no. Sounds like a hustle in this case.

Are you ordering from a restaurant?

$200 tip for packaging what has to be packaged to begin with? That is more than two days pay for some people.

Ok well management probably green lighted it and won’t give a shite.

It feels like the culture wants us to reward anyone working a minimum wage service job by leaving them a tip on top of it. I appreciate people working any job, but a tip should be an exception and not the norm. Not everyone can afford to tip all the time, especially at cheaper places.

Possibly but I could see some worker thinking they are slick asking for this behind managements back.

Whats next ,hey you gotta tip the butcher? Geez

Only tip for pizza deliveries, when eating in a restaurant, and the people that cut my hair. Usually tip 25-30% unless I get poor service.
I'm not tipping for the scenario OP described, picking up to go orders, drive through coffee places, or any other ridiculous situation where someone is doing a job they are paid to do.
If that makes me cheap, cool, could give a frick less

Restaurant that also sells bulk meat
I’m not buying a bunch of entrées that have to be put together. I’m buying huge pans of beef and sausage. They’re getting thrown in them and covered in foil.

You’re ordering $2,000 worth of meat. I’d throw up $20-30 for a tip. I would also not feel guilty if I didn’t give them shite.

Depends on the place whether they "deserve" it or not. Some places use tipped servers to box everything. Having said that, that's an issue for the industry in general. As a customer you shouldn't be responsible for ensuring their workers are compensated appropriately or not and relying on tipped workers to handle things like that is a bullshite practice that may or may not be legal depending on locale.
In short tip if you want but don't feel obligated and I would definitely say something about being solicited for a tip.

I wouldn't fee obligated but if it's a place I expect to be doing ongoing business with I'd probably tip. Not $200 though.

The people putting the order together deserve a tip but not $200. It shouldn’t be a percentage at that point. Don’t care if they have it pre programmed in their pos system.

20-30$ was my plan as well

When people ask me I am much more reluctant to tip
Posted on 5/19/24 at 3:08 pm to fr33manator
Would the meat packers even be the ones actually getting the tip?

Otherwise they shovel it into your trunk from a wheelbarrow.
