Do you ever stop and appreciate how well our government was designed?

Obviously it's gone completely off the rails because of lunatics on both side disregarding the original rules, but it really is impressive how intelligently they put it together all those years ago.
- A nation of 50 united states all with their own local government an autonomy loosely tied together by an expressly limited federal government.
- Congress at the state and federal level that gives equal weighting to the population (House of representatives) and the state as a whole (Senate)
- Checks and balances system to keep any individual branch from running away with power
If the rules were actually followed, states had their autonomy back, and federal government srhank to about 20% of its current size it would be such a beautiful system again. Alas, revolution is likely the only option.

Indeed. There are checks and balances built in the system that, when people with a backbone and not being paid off, use that power to keep corruption in check.

The Founders depended on an honest and ethical 4th estate. Individual journalists have always had their individual biases and vested interests but as a body they could be trusted. The death of Tim Russert was a dark day for the Republic. No one has arisen to take his place as the gatekeeper of objectivity.

It was a genius design. I wrote a paper on gridlock and Parliamentary Procedures early on at LSU. Wish I could find it, but researching the way our checks and balances are designed to work was fun. Most people don’t understand how gridlock is a good thing and how slowly our government is designed to work.
Problem now is…There is no accountability for those who don’t follow the rules.

Yes.
Current form? Not so much.

The founders had one shot to get it right as all of the needed elements came together in the right time and place. They probably didn’t envision the existence of 50 states, but did allow for growth.
As you say, we’ve crept away from the original intent of limited government, but I often wonder if the nation lasted as long as they had hoped it would back then. There were probably differing opinions on that, but would interested in the overall consensus about how long they expected it to last.

Ben knew it wouldn't last. They all did. But they did it anyway, hoping we would keep paying attention and maintain it.
That's some massive optimism considering everything they went through. I admire the hell out of them.
