In my half century the number of people who stare blankly at me as I speak has exploded, no new news here. I live in Texas, no surprise that Spanish is common. However, this weekend in Pennsylvania has me very surprised my the numbers who do not even have broken English. On the positive side, they do have jobs doing what American twenty-somethings wont do

I'm sure there are some bosses that appreciate the work a 20-something American would do, and eventually promote them out of that. But in most cases managers are just looking for a warm body to work till dead.

Fun fact. Most of them speak perfect English. That’s all an act.

Ghetto or hood talk is the same way. You can’t comprehend a thing they say.

This. I employ some legal workers that speak Spanish. I can’t tell you the amount of times they’ve brought friends or family in to apply for a job and they act like they don’t speak any English, then magically understand directions, jokes, etc.
It’s really no different than if an American went to work in Central America. You are bound to pick up a basic understanding fairly quickly when you are around it all the time.

By number of people who speak the language, Spanish is #4 worldwide. Why is this surprising?

Would you work for Mexican/immigrant rates?

Works both ways. I had a typical HR VP, female, half black half hispanic, very fat challenged physically, probably lesbian but I didnt ask.
She would always speak spanish with one of the other VPs in front of others, which I found very rude. After about a year, she was having a side conversation regarding business with the VP and I chimed in with a response.
She never dreamed this ole white country boy spoke spanish. The blank look on her face was priceless, you could see the rolodex flipping in her mind over all the conversations she had had in front of me.
I was golden from then on, nothing but rave performance reviews
