Why are people so bad at maps and geography?

I am pretty good with these things, and it just blows my mind how many people are downright awful at it.
My buddies and I were going to a bachelor trip in Biloxi. One of the wives said “why don’t y’all go somewhere out of state?”. We said Biloxi is out of state; it’s not in Louisiana. She was quite surprised by that.
Also, I like to use street names when I give directions because I know the names of most of the streets in town. This usually proves to be completely useless because apparently no one knows the names of any streets or highways that they drive on. I’ll use a street name, and I typically get hesitation, a puzzled look on their face, and the question “where is that???”. I’m starting to give up on using street names or highway names at all.
Thirdly, if I ask someone to locate a city or a state on the map, they usually have no idea where it is.
It just perplexes me how people can be so ignorant of geography and maps. It’s quite frustrating.

If I'm driving landmarks, streets, places eligible for piss stops, potential shortcuts, what type of 18 wheelers are using that road, any bodies of water, hunting stands in the distance, which overpasses have exits, and of course cheapest gas all gets etched into memory.
If I'm the passenger I may as well have been abducted by aliens and I don't remember shite about anything between point A and point B

I’m good at geography because I’m curious and like to look at maps and figure out how things fit and where. Not everyone is interested in it. It’s not too difficult to understand.

Me too. I was the atlas jockey on our family driving vacations. I would help my dad plan our routes all over the country. We would play the largest city and state capitol of each state game constantly. That led to me being really into World Geography. After awhile I could just mentally visualize the layout of the planet. Won state at literary rally in world geography thanks to my dad getting me interested in maps and stuff at a young age.

I mean, it’s a skill, just like anything else.
Not really that hard to figure out.

I have been a teacher for 3 decades. The stupidity is not limited to geography. I once gave a biology test with the answers written on the board and only 1 kid passed. I gave a history test with the following question:
The Pilgrims came to America seeking ________.
One kid wrote "attention".

We moved around through several states long before gps and as the male child it fell to me to be navigator. I remember dad teaching me 1st to read folding maps from gas stations and later how to use an atlas. I had to pay attention to the highway signs to keep him up to date on the next intersection we needed.
Talking I started reading maps before I ever went to school (mom’s got a secondary education degree and with 2 older sisters I started reading at like 2-3 years old).

There are a lot of people who can’t point to where they live on a map. I see it all the time during weather events. The National Weather Service or another meteorologist will post a map related to whatever weather event is happening and people will ask “What about X city?” when that place is clearly covered in the map.

I don’t get it either. Even back in grammar school I was curious about geography and loved looking at and studying maps.

Me : I’m moving to Japan.
Her: What language do they speak?
Me: Japanese.
Her: Now is your gf Japanese?’
Me: No she is Vietnamese.
Her: Do Vietnamese and Japanese speak the same language.
Me. As far as you know.

No excuse for geography.
When it comes to driving, most people use GPS now, and when you use direction finder, you aren’t actually learning your way there.
The cheat prevents anyone from learning directions.
