Some people would have a very difficult time with land nav in the Army!
IME that was one of the most lacking skills even 30 years ago. Most could get fairly simple land nav and orienteering but working in areas with few if any major landmarks getting their position in areas with nothing but wide contour lines left most befuddled.

Rural people are better at it. It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump but make sure you turn right where the Johnson barn used to be.

Americans are lazy and stupid and rely on apple maps.

I bought my wife at atlas for Christmas one year. It did not go over well.

If you want to really confuse some one, try giving directions like go north until you get to main street, then turn west, go 3 blocks and then turn south, third house on the west side.
Now for rural directions go straight on this road until the gravel road starts. Turn left when you see the old mattress in the ditch, turn right at the next gravel road.

I went to school with a girl who had to use GPS to go home.

I've had these same thoughts.. . We had to be creative and curious, or bored.
It was such a blessing to grow up in the environment I did, though when I was 12 I might not have agreed.

I think the real reason is technology/google maps etc.
People don’t need to really spend time figuring out where things are anymore; they just mindlessly follow their map directions and shortly forget about it.
I will say I’ve gotten way better at paying attention to where things are and general directions as I’ve gotten older, but only because I’ve taken interest in it and put forth effort.

One of the wives said “why don’t y’all go somewhere out of state?”. We said Biloxi is out of state; it’s not in Louisiana. She was quite surprised by that.
I could never be with someone so dumb.

I pull out the atlas any chance I get… very interesting and stunning how many cool places there are in this country….

Americans are exquisitely bad at geography.

I do think one builds a better connection without GPS. My Pops never used it, but could recall specific routes, roads, etc. with ease, and he had great navigational skills. I've been reliant upon GPS for most of my driving years, and while I can do that to an extent I'm nothing like he was. Anecdotal, sure, but I kind of wish I had done more free roaming or looking at a paper map to plan routes.

The ADC maps were a necessity in your car.

A woman was standing on a beach in Hawaii acting a bit perplexed.
She asks the host which ocean she was looking at.
He politely states n the Pacific Ocean.
She tells him that she also lives near an ocean.
"But, it must be the other one."
"Oh, where are you from, mam?"
"San Francisco "

Atlanta directions are thr worst in the world. It always is “go 3 blocks down Peachtree Drive until you reach Peach Avenue. Then take a left turn and go on Peach Avenue for 5 blocks until you reach the Coca-Cola sign. Then drive 9 blocks down Peach Lane until you reach the Waffle House. Then drive 4 blocks down Peach road until you reach the other Waffle House. Then my house will be 6 houses away from the Waffle House, right by the other Coca-Cola advertisement.”
