If told the same lie enough one can easily begin to believe it. Pretty soon, after a year of hearing someone say “ you don’t love me. You never loved me. What’s wrong with you that I don’t feel loved” and having this lie attributed to you, you understand the game . Or you internalize the lie and become that person’s psychological servant. But yes a LIE is at the core of all gaslighting. At its most malevolent, say a boss or a spouse who is a grandiose narcissist it can begin to feel almost violent. Especially if you don’t understand what you are experiencing.
