quote:well, in the movie he takes advantage of a low point in his wife’s life - so maybe it wasn’t too hard - but it’s still manipulative, and manipulation is usually an indicator of mental illness
bet he didn't have to work too hard
Point being, even if he didn’t have to work too hard, he’s the mentally ill one regardless

Gaslighting is the same as "pissing on my shoes and tell me it's raining". It's from an old play where the husband lowers the gas lamps brightness little by little each day. He convinces his wife she's imagining it and going crazy so he can have her committed and run off with side piece.
My wife tries this with me all the time and call her out with quickness. Her standard response is, "what does that word even mean?"
To which I say, "you're a poly sci major with a JD. You know what it means." She STFUs and changes the subject.

Sorry, I should have said they were effeminate, not low T.

Manipulation is how I understand it
In order to manipulate … shouldn’t there be some sort of end game gain/win??
I don’t think the attempt to win someone over on your point of view is manipulation.
It’s debate . It’s conversation, it’s dialogue.
Communication 101.

If you don’t understand gaslighting, then you yourself are the gaslighter.

This doesn’t seem to be a thing one sex does more than the other. Men lie just as much as women do and vice versa.

It's just the hot, new word for "manipulation".

I spent decades being “ gaslit “. Call it want you want, it’s a tactic. Narcissists specialize in it. If you don’t recognize it, it can destroy you. I can spot it now, have recently, and I run with a quickness.
All these psychological phrases get overused, which causes a reaction to make fun of the phrase and the concept by the cool OT kids. And then their gf or husband begins to gaslight them for real and they get it. Everything is overused until it’s your reality.
I didn’t know what passive aggression was for 30 years. Somebody tells me know “ hey Pimp you are being passive aggressive “ I understand it and think, damn you are right. So knowing these terms is a bonus .And we all do this primitive shite .

You can still do shite without understanding a specific term. Children do it all the fricking time.

It’s like the word “trauma.”
Both have legitimate use cases.
Both have been coopted by neurotic nutcases in their endless pursuit of sympathy and attention.
I think "violence" was the first word I remember seeing coopted (e.g. offensive words are violence) that made me go "uh oh, this is going to be a problem..."
