What do you guys think of Zach Edey as one of our two 1st round picks?

Hes not a mobile switchable big. If you guys want to bitch at Willie all season for not playing him- then yes we should draft him.
We will likely have only one first round pick. We will defer the lakers pick to next year.

We won’t have 2 firsts. We will have #21. Taking a flyer on Edey that late isn’t a big deal. You’d have some upperclassmen that fall and some other C’s available, but whomever we pick at #21 in this draft is unlikely to make much impact. Not my preference, but Edey can at least be a situational big.

I see a couple of issues with Edey for this team.
-He's not switchable and Willie Green always lean on smaller switchable bigs especially in the crunch.
-Willie wants to play fast. Not sure how fast you can play with Edey. I know what his combine measurements says but his game is half court oriented, methodical, and requires you to isolate him in the post. Fit with Z?
- We currently don't have a PG who can get him the ball. We had so much trouble getting Jonas the ball these past 3 seasons and even though Edey is bigger, I'm skeptical they'll suddenly be able to do it with any consistency unless they bring in a PG.
At the end of the day, it about the level of expectations. If all you want is a rotational big that may not be a factor in closing games, you'll be happy with him. But if you want a guy that compliments Zion and can play in crunch time with him, you might think we're wasting a pick.
FYI, we are probably going to defer the Lakers pick, so we're essentially only have 1 first round pick assuming we keep the pick.

I believe the deadline is June 1 but isn’t it considered a lock that we defer?
This is considered a weak draft class and, given the Lakers’ issues, the chances of them ending up in the lottery is decent. Especially if they either don’t make a move or they make the wrong move like they did with Westbrick.

Edey is going to outplay his draft position, but he would bust here. Willie wouldn't play him.

How is this true? I havent watched him play, and know it is often said, but with his combine numbers, it seems he would have fast enough feet to play D in space.

Very true. He's going to be a pure drop big in the league. Watch UConn destroy him on the switch in the championship game.

I wouldn't mind him at 21

I am not denying it, just asking for an explanation. I think I read the numbers show him to be more nimble than Trey. If accurate, can he be taught better perimeter D?

There's layers to it. Guys like Bam tested slower than Edey and we know Edey will never be able to do what Bam does. Why? Read and react speed, play recognition, defensive IQ and awareness. Things that can't be measured purely by numbers.
There is enough of a sample size to see that he's doesn't have the ability to switch at the collegiate level. It's nothing new with Edey and will continue to be an issue against bigger and faster players on a bigger spaced out floor.
Being a pure drop coverage big isn't a death sentence. Guys like Gobert won DPOY playing mostly drop coverage and Kessler thrives in drop. Clingan who will be top 10 will mostly be a drop coverage guy in the league but he has some intangibles that Edey lacks. He should be able to play drop pretty well against teams that don't play 5 out offenses.
Willie Green like to mix up his defensive coverages and prefers bigs with more mobility to switch coverages on the fly. And that plays a huge role in how much Willie plays certain types of bigs.

If they want him then they should bring Jonas back. He’s Jonas without the offense.

I wasn’t a fan of his most of this season but I would definitely take him. No matter how u look at it the pels need a post defender in the worst way. On offense get him out the way.

He's not going to be some stalwart at the rim. Hes the slowest 1st rd center I've seen in the past 15 years, and if he ever became a starter he'd be on one of the worst teams in the league

At 7'4 averaged 2 blocks a game. I think he would help alot versus the bigs in this league. It seems everyone last season just got out of the way.

This is where I’m at. I think he could be very useful in the right situation. I would t mind taking him. He’s the opposite of Jax.

I think it will be better answered when we know for sure what the return for BI looks like. If you're getting a guy like Okongwu back in a trade package then Edey makes a lot of sense. If you're getting someone like Jarrett Allen, then there's no point in Edey. Just depends on what this roster looks like after the BI trade.
