You ought to try to visit while she is there.
I was going to try and head over for a month or so and see some old friends this summer, but some things came up that depleted my savings and set me back this year. I still want to, but it might not be doable. I've got friends in the Wales, England, Germany and the Netherlands I haven't seen in about a decade. It would be good to see them and hang out with her and show her what's left of where I used to roam.

How does one attend Oxford "in" Cambridge?

Sorry, I never visited that part of the country and always associated Oxford with Cambridge -- or Oxbridge. My mistake University of Oxford in Oxford.
Corrected.

Duke is easily $60,000 a year and the additional costs of study abroad add onto that. Her parents have to be rich asf to afford that

She's on a full ride to Duke and I believe a scholarship to Oxford.

I lived in Cambridge for almost ten years. It’s better.

I stayed mostly around London, a bit in Bristol and then a brief stint in Kircaldy

Getting a full ride merit scholarship to a school like Duke is nearly impossible. There’s no way in hell she’s getting a full ride to pay for everything including the study abroad. Her parents are having to pay for at least some of it.

OK, she's not.
I'm not putting my niece's info out there to prove she earned that scholarship. She turned down Ivy League opportunities because she preferred Duke.

That's wonderful. Study abroad was something I could only dream about after a college girlfriend spent a summer there. I made sure my daughter had the opportunity, and she enjoyed her time there and in France. Sorry you aren't able to make the trip.

I mean she’s probably is getting plenty enough financial aid that can cover the majority of the costs. Schools like Duke and Harvard will give a lot of financial aid to students due to the insane endowment rates they have.
But as far as getting a full ride merit to a place like Duke, you can probably count on one hand the amount of students who actually get it. It’s super rare. Your niece must be an academic prodigy that had absolutely perfect grades in HS

It's not that expensive if you have friends that live in the places you are going. I've been on this board for awhile. I used to be a backpacker and lived and traveled through central and south america for years (mostly Guatemala and Nicaragua). I made lots of friends along the way I haven't seen in a decade -- though we keep in touch. So, if I went over there, I would just stay with them for a week at a time and just have to pay travel and buy them dinner and groceries and pick up the cost of entertainment. Pretty doable if I didn't have a lot of unforeseen big expenses earlier this year.

If she wants to see Merry Old England without the tourist hordes of the Cotswolds, spend some time in Herefordshire and Shropshire.

Perhaps she can visit the Beatrix Potter museum while she is in England. It is one of my favorite places to go there.

quote:Hopefully she is also going directly into her PhD. Because a non-terminal psych degree is beyond worthless without thousands of hours of clinical practice. And she's probably borrowing $50K/year for it at 8% interest. But hey, she'll make a great social worker. Yay Duke and study abroad!
Psychology. She's going straight into the master's program when she finishes undergrad.
Both of my brothers and I also spent a summer in Oxford and/or Cambridge. They love taking dumb American parents' money for some bullshite "History of the British Invasion Rockers" classes. Spent half my time over there tripping my balls off in Amsterdam.

Yes, she was.
ETA: So was her mother -- my older sister -- she received the Bryce Scholarship to Alabama which is at the time was the highest scholarship offered to in state students for the University of Alabama. I think it's called the Presidential Elite Scholarship now. They basically pay you to go to school. Everything was covered and she got a stipend each semester. Not sure if that's my niece's deal but I know she has no debt....now my nephew at Miss State....
