My girlfriend (now wife) and I lived upstairs in an apt complex years ago. The wind was picking up one night and so I walked outside to see if it's about to start raining. A 3 month lab/golden retriever mix with tons of fleas was coming down the street and either smelled or heard me, and came walking up the steps to me. She was a lil little on the skinny side, but not bad. Figured she might have escaped a couple days before. I asked around the neighborhood/subdivision by us, posted on FB, and put flyers up. No one claimed her. 10 minutes after walking up to us, it started storming. We took her in the apartment and cleaned her up and gave her water. I slipped to the local dollar tree to get some puppy chow. She ate a serving well.

She never left our home for 13 years until she got sick and passed. She was the first thing my wife and I was responsible for together. She found us. And she loved both of our kids like they were her own. Her death shook us hard.

But look at the love she put in your life, and the bond she gave you and your wife.

Dogs teach us about love, and how short life really is.
