He could throw a curve. He just learned to throw curves after his arm more fully developed after high school. That's one reason he lasted so long. He took care of his arm and worked it out with bands a lot as he got older. A lot of the pitchers back in the day took the same approach which was why they could pitch so long (steroids for some aside).

That's what I was saying earlier in the thread. Coaches these days teach young pitchers curves etc too early and it can screw up their arms in the long term.
