You mean public money that comes from the taxpayers? Public money doesn’t grow on trees and it wasn’t created by the state legislature.

OK… how did invading Iraq benefit most Americans?
LOL. That's not what I said. I said most military interventions are not just about money.
quote:
The stated purpose was to find nonexistent WMDs.
You mean that the leaders of a country would state a reason that isn't actually the reason they want to intervene militarily in a situation about which they have about 100 times more (classified) information than can be released to the general public? Gasp! The horror of it all!
Of course they don't always tell you the truth. Good grief. This isn't church sponsored bingo we're talking about. If you expect them to tell the general public the truth about military action you are being very naive. That's not how military conflict works.
And again, automatically defaulting to, "They didn't tell us the truth, so it's all about money" is the low-IQ knee jerk false dilemma binary thinking that is so popular around here.
They didn't tell you the truth about the Cuban Missile Crisis either. In fact, Kennedy and Khrushchev probably saved the whole world from nuclear disaster by not telling even their generals and advisors the whole truth and instead by exchanging secret (at the time, anyway) personal letters between the two. Both sets of advisors were pushing them to escalate the situation and they de-escalated it themselves.
But I digress.
I think the Korean Conflict ultimately proved worth it. Many disagree, but given the fact that the US finally caused the collapse of the USSR by outspending them, I think the proxy wars that defined the Cold War were worth it, including Vietnam.
And here's my reasoning for that. The USSR was not only the biggest threat to the United States in the 20th century, but also the entire world—a much bigger threat than the Nazis. Because they had so many nuclear weapons and were willing to use them. So they weren't just the greatest threat to the world in the 20th century, they were the greatest threat to the world in all of recorded history.
And we beat them by not directly fighting them but by fighting proxy, tech, financial, and ideological wars with them.
I can understand someone in 1971 thinking to themselves, "What the hell are we doing fighting a war in a primitive country thousands of miles away from our shores who can't possibly be a threat to us?" I get that thought. But that isn't what we were doing. We were fighting the USSR by proxy. We were forcing them to spend $166 Billion dollars (almost a Trillion in 2024 dollars) that they couldn't afford to fight a proxy war.
And given the perspective of 20 years after the fact when the USSR fell, it made sense. And that's the thing. Your average populist cannot connect dots like that. He or she can only think literally, straight ahead, and one move at a time. He or she is incapable of seeing or understanding how intervening in world affairs can indirectly benefit the US. Shipping lanes, supply chains, proxy wars, etc., etc.
You carelessly reading and therefore misinterpreting my use of the word "most" now applies here: I think we missed on Iraq. I think we tried to apply some of the past strategies and didn't account for how religiously zealous the mindset is in the region.
But honestly, you often can't tell until years after the fact how successful an intervention was.

Civilization survived for centuries without electricity so getting rid of that would also be a breeze, right?
You realize that when society molds after it has become accustomed to certain aspects, it’s not simple to just take those aspects away, right?
How much infrastructure and operations are dependent upon public babysitting? If you can come up with an answer to that that is in any way comparable to our operational dependence upon electricity, then I'll listen to this nonsense. I've known probably 20 families who have not relied on the government to watch their kids for them, and it really wasn't that hard for them. It was different and they definitely made unconventional choices, but none of them struggled.
I've known zero families who did without electricity. Maybe you know some?
And here's the problem with SS, since you brought it up:
Unless someone finds a magic fairy who can fart money out of her arse at will, it's going away whether anyone likes it or not. The only question is when.

RFK revealed this recently in an interview. JFK went against all of his advisers to bomb the missile sites and escalate.
Would have killed thousands of Russian soldiers.

You have all the answers. “Trust what the government says about the military, they know more than you.”
“End public education and social security. People will figure it out.”
“Homeschool your kids of various ages while maintaining employment as a doctor or waitress or plumber. The computer can teach your 5 year old how to use the computer and read while you’re somewhere else earning money.”
Thanks for solving every problem.
There’s no way you have kids or interact with them with any sort of frequency.

Eventually co-ops will replace classrooms for wealthier kids
It could be done now, cheaper with classrooms under a dozen
The current model is pricing itself out of existence

Why did you feel the need to make this statement? And who are you again? I’ve never seen your screen name before and you feel like everyone needs to know you didn’t read the thread you’re posting in because you don’t like me, while choosing to click on a thread that I very clearly started and respond to my post that is clearly authored by me?
The fact that so many grown men are flocking to my thread to insult me is just wild. You can’t argue with what I say so you respond with “stupid whore” to a married mother you’ve never met and with whom you actually sought out interacting.
Y’all are drawn to me like a moth to a flame and when I ignore your stupidity y’all just come up with crasser and crasser insults hoping I’ll finally respond to you. How desperate for my attention are you? It’s so bizarre. How are you not embarrassed of yourselves? Truly no shame or integrity whatsoever.
I can see why many of you spend most of your waking hours posting to each other on this anonymous message board. So pathetic.

I usually (not always) try really hard to keep it conversational with you and avoid insults, but when you do things like this it's really difficult.
"Well, what about XYZ, huh? Answer me that!"
"O.k., ABC."
"So I guess you just have all the answers, you MAN!"
I'm warning you that I'm trying, but any more of this nonsense and the gloves are coming off.
quote:
End public education and social security.
Another one of your typical tactics. I never said either of those things.
What I said is that SS is insolvent, so whether you or I or anyone else likes it, at some point it's going to end. Regarding public education, I said that we have a deep societal problem if the most essential function public schools provide is taxpayer funded babysitting, which is what YOU said it was.
Twice.
Then you literally said that society would crumble if we ever had to do without either one, which is obviously fallacious since society survived just fine without them, and not all that long ago, either.
quote:
Thanks for solving every problem.
I didn't solve anything. I just pointed out some simple common sense and relayed some personal anecdotes of people who have done what you claim is impossible.
quote:
Homeschool your kids of various ages while maintaining employment as a doctor or waitress or plumber.
If you're a doctor then your spouse need not work, yes?
A waitress is a great job for homeschooling. You work the dinner shift. In fact, two of the families I have known who homeschooled chose to do exactly that. It was actually their best solution.
I knew a family with a plumber who did it too. He went into business for himself and he took all of the emergency after hours calls while his employee took the regular calls so that he could be home during the day.
Here's the thing. We both know why you won't admit that this can be done despite me knowing several families who have done it.
You're one of those people who believes that people shouldn't have to make any sacrifices or take any personal responsibility for figuring hard things out. They should be able to make any choices they want, and the government should make it possible for them to make those choices.
You're right that people can't do whatever the hell they want and not need public funded babysitting. I never said that or anything like it. I said that I have known many families who made that choice and figured it out. And here's something I haven't said so far—I've never seen a family try to do this and actually be committed enough to make unconventional life choices to achieve it, yet ultimately fail.
But yeah, it takes sacrifice and it usually takes a Mommy AND a Daddy (imagine that) to make it work.
And if there were no "free" babysitting, imagine how much higher the marriage rate might be, since we're speculating on the societal effects of not having it.
quote:
There’s no way you have kids or interact with them with any sort of frequency.
There's really no response to this except frick you. Again, when you get frustrated in the debate you resort to personal insults. And this one is particularly ridiculous. I'm arguing for the (observed in reality) possibility of spending much MORE time with children and being wiling to sacrifice to make that happen. You're claiming that there's no way to do that and people just have to turn their children over to government employed strangers every day and that they shouldn't try to arrange their lives otherwise.
Yet I'm the one who doesn't interact with my children. O.k., MENSA.
And btw, since you don't want me to answer your questions, I'll ask you one. A very obvious one.
Why doesn't society collapse without taxpayer funded babysitting during the summer? What happens then?
