Best damn shorts ever made
I've got a few pairs pushing a decade that are still in great shape. They don't fit quite like they used to, but I still wear the hell out of them...

Nothing says I'm a hardcore fisherman like this hat
Here's a starter kit for the semi professionals
These guys will out fish everyone above 100:1

If you want functional, I have a Shelta Osprey. Wear it a lot when kayak fishing. Brim won’t bend in the wind so you can wear it on the boat and offshore without it flopping off.

If you want him to look like a OG and not be part of the flatbill crowd.
Get him some helly Hansen and 66* .
It’s what people who make a living on the water wear. But I can look at poser and by his tan or condition of his hands tell if he’s a poser just keep that in mind.

I’ll add Flood Tide Co. out of South Carolina. I have one of their caps and like it.

FWIW every baw on the gulf coast that offshore fishes owns shite from aftco and grunden
Grunden is also used by commercial fisherman globally, almost exclusively in many parts of the world. Sailers also. They are the real deal but they have become trendy which tends to mean lower quality over time. I have a pair of Grunden Jupiter Inlet dance shoes that are going on 40 years old, look like hell and still work as well as they did when new. For the uncultured Jupiter Inlet dance shoes are white shrimping boots....worn with the tops rolled down because the damn things will be about half full of sweat in an hour if they ain't....

Marsh Wear, Waterland, and BEDO come to mind.
