Not walking in your high school graduation is such a nothing burger. In 10 years he won't give a shite.
Although if it is true, the school is an a-hole.

Reminds me when I was in a wreck and 20 minutes late to English class my senior year. Teacher told me since I was late I could not turn in an assignment that was big chunk of my grade.
"In the real world, being late is not an excuse."
Bitch what would you know, you are a high school teacher.

It’s probably not even the kid who’s making a big deal about it. Graduation ceremony is more for the family. I have to admit, it was embarrassing as a parent to have to tell the grandparents and aunts and uncles not to come because my kid can’t walk over some BS. And yeah, my kid really did commit the minor infraction and i punished them for it. It’s a hard lesson to learn that sometimes, if people don’t like you for whatever reason, those in power will abuse it and use it to single you out. If you know you are in a situation like that, maybe a job where the boss doesn’t like you, keep your head down and mind your p’s and q’s until you are in a better situation. This no-walking shite is more a punishment for me than it is for them.

Gotta hear the entire story to judge anyone. But yeah, seems like the kid should walk.

I mean he got there somehow.
A lot of this shite could be averted if people had some personal responsibility and didn’t always want an exception to be made for them.
Go to work, pack a bag with your uniform and do your suspension. This shite ain’t rocket science.

I agree. But if he went to Saturday detention instead of just skipping it, is this punishment worth it for the district? I just find it laughable that La schools get hyper-focused on things like this and the girl from last year along with other minor things when they are struggling to provide quality education with high graduation rates.
Our public schools don’t have dress codes or Saturday detention. Detentions are served during study hall periods with one of their actual teachers giving them actual subject assignments to complete. There are certainly rules but they tend to focus on performance instead of petty. They are also much higher rated than any LP school with almost perfect graduation rates.

School uniforms for Saturday detention? How dumb.

I see your point but if this kid worked two jobs and required different clothing, but got fired from the second for not wanting to wear the uniform I think this board would have a different opinion. He’s an upper class man about to be entering the “real” world.
Personal accountability and some forethought is all I’m saying.

I agree with personal accountability and forethought. But I also know that a 17-18 year old is generally forgetful about things they shouldn’t be. Yeah, he’s entering the real world now but that doesn’t diminish that he met the academic requirements for graduation and some adult in the district office is using some petty shite to keep him from walking. What does that teach him about the real world? Does that teach him that meeting the requirements means nothing and some dweeb pencil pusher with no real world experience can screw him over on some petty shite?
Why does LP need such authoritarian rules in their district when other, higher performing districts don’t? Why do they feel the need to take a stand over petty shite like this? There should be reasons for those rules and the repercussions and the primary focus should be safety and academic performance. This is a waste of the district’s time and energy and adds zero value to the education.

Schools take their power seriously.
It is really important to them.

Not going to be a popular opinion here but I blame the community. The voting booth speaks loudly when people use it.

And LP still re-elected the sheriff who turned a blind eye to that cop, because, if you didn't write it down, it didn't happen.
And the school system was never held accountable or investigated. The LP Soviet Republic is an unconstitutional joke.

If we stop and use common sense, the world would be a better place. A guy I know got a bacterial infection was in the hospital 4 months ago and still looks skin and bones. His employer terminated him voluntary quit. Cant get unemployment, can’t work.
All they had to do was give him a clean lay off and he’d at least get 800 a month. Pennys but it’s something.

Did he get the infection at work? If not, why would the employer be responsible for his unemployment pay?
ETA Did the company not offer short term disability?

According to OP he did get permission beforehand which was granted then denied when he showed up to detention
quote:
asked permission from the administration to wear his work shirt (a long sleeve welding shirt) to detention. He was told he could but when he showed up to detention, the teacher on duty said he wasn't wearing a school uniform and would be counted absent.

Saturday detention is what LA law refers to as alternative to suspension, it is not a detention used for minor infractions.
The alternative to suspension is typically granted to prevent a true 4th suspension which would result in an expulsion recommendation.
Providing the Saturday detention was already cutting the kid a break so they wouldn’t be suspended, expelled, and then ineligible to receive the diploma at all.
The school sounds like they are providing an additional concession by still providing the diploma.
There is no legal standing for a right to participate in a graduation ceremony. It is simply a ceremony, and isn’t guaranteed for anyone by statute or constitution.
