Always fly 20+ miles away from a thunderstorm in GA aircraft.
Is this something he would have/ should have known?

nothing wrong with the plane
The V-tail design gained a reputation as the "forked-tail doctor killer", due to crashes by overconfident wealthy amateur pilots, fatal accidents, and inflight breakups.
Most V-tail failures involved flight under visual flight rules into instrument meteorological conditions, the flight into thunderstorms, or airframe icing.

Seems like a likely scenario. RIP.

It’s a common teaching topic amongst CFIs and the FAA recommends it.
This early into the crash investigations it’s impossible to know if he even entered a thunderstorm.
That being said, a thunderstorm is not necessarily needed to cause this type of crash. Turbulent conditions in wind shear can do it too and that’s certainly a possibility with today’s weather.

Horrible. Prayers out to the family.
A similar situation happened to a high school friend of mine in Arkansas. His dad (dentist) and two sisters crashed on the way to Fayetteville for a basketball game.

The plane was 58 years old. I know old planes are taking care of but after that many years, it just feels like there’s a big risk and not worth it.

V tail doctor killer strikes again
Yep, small planes have earned the nickname of "doctor killers"

Man, that's horrible. To be a doctor, it takes a bit of swag and confidence, sometimes that translates into overconfidence.

Bonanzas are known as doctor killers for a reason. Those angled tails seem easy until they aren’t.

Extremely old plane
It's only as old as me and my plane was built in 1947

I live in Williamson County here in TN ( Brentwood ) . The plane went down in the Leipers Fork area, broke up in mid-air. Weather was good today, shouldn't have been a factor.

I've always liked that area. I had a friend who lived there.

If so, that company IS PROPER frickED!
ETA: Oh, it was a small plane. Thought it was a passenger plane. Thoughts and prayers.

This is why I never have flown and will never

Take an airliner....lots of pilots, lots of engines. Would never get on one of these small planes.... but that's just me.
