Jesus, at 5 people caught this is just getting weird. It appears the number of irresponsible gun owners is growing rapidly. Ammo boxes are cheap and plentiful.
Yes, these people were irresponsible. But focusing on this loses sight of the greater question.
Why is Turks doing this? It makes no sense, either from a public safety, tourism or fiscal standpoint.
It's completely stupid.
With Griner and Russia, there were international political implications. Turks is our ally and the United States accounts for 82 percent of the tourists that travel there.
This is such an unforced error that it's almost comical.

Too bad for them. But if you are gonna travel abroad you need to know the rules and check everything. If not , then stupid you.
Yep . Hard love but I agree

Shitty island anyway. Too remote. Not as cool as many of the other barrier reefs in the area. Go to Roatan Honduras and save yourself the trouble.
I got drunk and caught a spiny lobster by hand after many hours of snorkeling while also catching all the illegal conch I could and made a Caribbean stew.
Place sucks. No surf for all those islands. Y’all can have it.

What a shitty take. It's OK to advocate for personal responsibility, while also recognizing that some laws are egregious and illogical.
12 years in prison for a random bullet in a suitcase and you are OK with that?
These people were LEAVING the country and had committed no acts of violence or had used the ammunition that they were found with.
I'm sure you read the entire criminal code for every municipality, state and country you travel to.

They aren't looking for ammo on departure it is just a serendipitous find. I don't know what people regularly try to smuggle out of TC but one thing I can guarantee that occasionally happens is divers taking stuff as someone else mentioned. Over the years I have seen several divers take coral frags on their last day.
I find it crazy 5 people had random rounds floating around in their luggage, first I don't want my bullets getting marred while loose. I am also OCD about things in my luggage in international travel. Domestically I have a pill bottle with 3-4 different basic OTC meds (pain, heartburn etc) they are all generic and in one bottle. Internationally, I only take name brands and keep each in their retail container. OTC pills are often plain with no distinguishing markings/color/shape and mixed into a single bottle could easily be a way for a zealous agent to create a very bad day for me. With this OCD lens I just find it nuts 5 different people had rounds floating around loose in their luggage.
I think the possible penalty is OTT but I also think Singapore is overzealous with their drug laws although I don't partake in rec drugs if I did I would buy new luggage for Singapore.

The issue is not that they are looking or what they find, but the penalty.
Fine them $5,000 and move on. It makes no sense to piss off the country that makes up 82 percent of your tourists, and encumbers you with expensive court cases and prison expenses. It's stupid.

I agreed with your post but i dont understand the part i quoted- as someone who is paranoid myself when traveling internationally , why would new luggage be advantageous ? Couldn’t you just as easily examine ur own old luggage for contraband before traveling ? Or maybe im a dumbass.

You all don't think it odd that all of the sudden multiple people are getting caught up in the same issue? It's more believable to me that this ammo is being planted. Fir what reason, I don't know. But it's just very odd this issue started happening.

I was partly being melodramatic but was also thinking about residue and smells leading to a sniffer dog alerting on my luggage. Even with no visible drugs it could result in a very bad day.

Well BravwsDawg,
How many times have you been to Turks and Caicos? Where did you stay? How long? What restaurants did you go to? What supermarket did you buy your liquor at?
Keep talking shite.
I swear. Poser.

might they have a case against TSA for failing to detect the ammo when they departed USA
sue people for me braking the law and getting away with it at one checkpoint but getting busted at another? this is an extremely hypocritical place

What makes my head spin is how our government tried so hard And traded a terrorist to get a women’s basketball player released from custody in Russia after she knowingly and purposefully try to sneak illegal drugs into the country
Yet someone that left a couple stray rounds in the bottom of a bag from a trip to the shooting range is ignored by the White House and the state department

the guy's a dumbass, plain and simple, as I posted before, the wife and I were down there when this happened, but had no knowledge of it until we got home(left the day after,) she wanted to bring back a few bottles of their local hot sauce, PeppaJoy, which are 5 oz. bottles, and the first thing that came to mind was security, I told her she'd either have to check a bag or buy it inside security, I did a little checking around at work after we got home and learned that this has been a frequent violation in Provo(by US citizens,) and they they are getting tired of it, I hope an agreement can be reached and he doesn't have to do the time, but he's an idiot, that shite's been illegal for air travel way before 9/11
