Or maybe I don’t want to risk losing over a decade of my life and miss my kids growing up over some draconian law that I accidentally break?
Are you a woman? Why the hysterics?

I am sorry people are shitting on your honeymoon spot but I can assure you most people here can afford a $3,000 vacation, it’s really not as exclusive as you think it is and there are plenty of other spots in the Caribbean to go on vacation.
$3,000
I don't care if you are "shitting" on my spot (it wasn't my honeymoon spot), I just think that you're being stupid, and it's obvious that you've never been there. You're like a dumb American who wonders why people go to Mexico City because it's full of cartel violence.

Is one of the options not bringing shite into another country that isn't legal there?
Years ago, my cousin got stopped leaving Jamaica with a round in his suitcase that he had taken hunting previously. Did not realize he had the round. The Jamaican authorities took him aside and asked him some questions, confiscated the round with a warning and let him go on his way. It made a huge impression on him to be more careful.
This is the appropriate response from authorities for this situation.

Not hiding this fact. And I never will if this is how they treat their tourists.

Same result in Mexico too, right?
It’s a stupid law but there are prolly lots of countries like this.
Hit or miss in Mexico but not worth the risk. I drove into Juarez about 8 years ago to catch a flight to Ixtapa (domestic flight was less than 20% of what the same flight from El Paso would have been). I drove my old Tahoe hunting wagon and did a sweep but missed a full box of dove loads in behind the dog kennel. I stopped on the way north to do a final pass and found it..pretty surreal. I tossed them in a dumpster behind a motel and as soon as I stopped the damned rent a cop came almost at a trot to find out what I was doing....I tossed them and left, waving at the security guard as I drove past him. He must have not seen me toss them because he was headed back into the lobby as I drove away. Crossed the border without a hitch. I knew other people who did almost the same thing except doing another sweep on the way north and they were detained and paid the typical Mexico fine which is whatever cash you can lay your hands on pretty quick. There are people arrested regularly though. Most of the time when you are coming back they do not bother to check but they do occasionally. It is probably different now, this has been 8 years or so ago when I was crossing pretty regularly....

they’re very tourist friendly, certainly way much more so than the USVIs, they just politely request that you observe their rules

I’m fine with getting punished for breaking the law. A fine or even a night in jail. A week in jail would be cruel and unusual punishment.
A month in jail and I’m never visiting your country. 12 years? It’s no different than a death sentence.

Some of y'all aren't limited to domestic boot licking. Yeah, this guy fricked up. But it's ridiculous that he should spend over a decade in prison because of it.
It is insane. Unless they are suspected of smuggling ammo or weapons into the country on a commercial scale they should simply be denied entry and sent back to the states.
I used to go to the Bahamas regularly on my boat. This was through 2006. I ALWAYS had a loaded gun on the boat....every single time....as did almost everyone unless they were brain dead. Most of the time the Bahamians did not inspect boats at the time....but they did occasionally. When they did it was not a pleasant few minutes because they are notorious hard asses about it....although, like most of their counterparts, are open to negotiations about the penalty....they never found a gun on my boat but there was one there every time and they probably damn well knew it and were just going through the motions. I do not think I would carry one today...supposedly they have gotten really tough on it and paying the "fine" in cash and going on about your business is not the way they do business today....do not know that, its based on anecdotes....

Those guys are "ours" and T&C is "them." It's perfectly reasonable and sound to favor us over them even if we acknowledge these guys screwed up in some limited fashion.
Throwing power and weight around is the natural and historic condition of negotiations and we have leverage over T&C. Perfectly fine to use it here, IMO.
Completely agree.
I can't wrap my head around the straight up blind notion that "well they have rules". By that measure T&C could have them publicly executed and people would be fine with it "because rules".

Really interesting seeing some of the same folks who said we should "let Greiner rot" in this thread begging for this guy to be released

Hey, but she intentionally took drugs in to the country. These are just some baws who made an honest mistake.
Look, of course the potential sentence is ridiculous. Of course some discretion should be used and they should be let out with time served and a fine. But you hear about this type of stuff often, and it's hard to feel too much sympathy for people who do this.
I'm perfectly fine with the U.S. Government exerting some pressure on TCI to get them released, and if people want to boycott TCI, they can knock themselves out.
I've just been to TCI probably 5 or 6 times and have always enjoyed myself (other than the astronomical prices for food).

Yeah, we're a family of four, and I don't think $3,000 even covered our food costs for a week.

We are a family of 3 and there’s no way $3000 covered our dining expenses for a week. Not to mention alcohol.

that was probably our biggest expense

A couple guys in this thread have even said the quiet part out loud, which is that they have a double standard b/c they dont like how she looks and who she sleeps with… As much as we joke around here about whether teachers are ‘guilty’ or ‘not guilty’ based on their looks- in the real world, that’s not how laws work .

his place is heavily weighted with "rules are for thee" folks

We typically stay at an all inclusive with butler service. It’s not cheap but I don’t want to have to deal with meals and orders while on vacation. I can’t imagine what it costs with itemized food and alcohol.

No, it’s more because of her being so vocally anti-American and talking about how oppressive the US is and then she got to experience real oppression and posters were saying that it served her right. It had nothing to do with her appearance or sexual preference.
