re: Will Bear Jones be back at LSU next year?

No doubt

with that being said I think it's a 50/50 at this point.
I'd agree, but I don't know Jared Jones or what he's all about, what his priorities are. What motivates him, etc...He had to put in a lot of work to make the jump he did from last year to this year. And I think it's a bit underrated because Jay could stick him just about anywhere in the lineup last year and he had protection in front of and behind him. This year, he had Tommy in front of him getting on base (and behind him when he had that few game experiment hitting leadoff), and Trav behind him for a bit at the beginning of the year. But what makes his jump so impressive is that he went from one of the deepest/longest lineups in maybe college baseball history to a very short one this year. He gets everybody's focus almost AB.
That said, the jump from a nice true freshman season that exposed some weaknesses that he could focus on working on to turn himself into a really good SEC hitter was relatively "easy." For a guy with his talent. The cliche of you make the biggest jump from your 1st year to 2nd year seemed to manifest with him this season. It's much harder to make that 2nd big jump from year 2 to year 3. Not impossible, but not guaranteed. A lot will depend on health and whoever is surrounding him in the lineup.
But he could bust his arse and make strides, just not the exponential ones he made from year 1 to year 2. Or he could turn into Charlie Condon. But I think to do that, he'd have to dedicate so much of his time and energy to it, that it may not leave him much time for a social life, a girlfriend, alll the other perks that come along with being the baseball superstar BMOC as somebody mentioned earlier.
But if he's willing to do that and LSU can put a decent NIL package together for him, that might be a reason to come back. So few draft picks wind up making the bigs, but these draft eligible sophomores are in a unique position where they can make an NIL deal to get them back, and then get a signing bonus the next year. So that could be 2 nice packages, especially added together, that could set him up even better if never makes it to the show.
I think a lot will just depend on what his priorities are. He's gonna have to ride busses in A ball one way or another, whether it's next year or the next. Maybe he's ready to get on with it. Or maybe he just loves LSU and wants to come back. I wonder how much being a big contributor on a NC team is gonna affect him and Herring. There's nothing--team-wise--that will eclipse last year. We'll see.

I'm more worried about Griffin Herring, getting him to stay another year could make or break LSU's rotation in 2025
I really think Jay is gonna have to basically guarantee him a weekend starting rotation gig to get him to come back and a nice NIL deal. He has great value in his role and is awesome in it, but nobody dreams of being a long-reliever. He's more than that to us, but that's not his MLB dream. Not a bad MLB gig for sure, but nobody's getting up at 5 and running or lifting weights to be a mid-game innings eater. They'll take it if they get there, but they wouldn't get there if that's their goal. It's not enough to separate them from the more ambitious guys. But I think Herring is super ambitious, super competitive, and wants the ball. But I think he wants it as a starter on the weekend. That's where his stuff will work best in the bigs.
That said, like Bear, I don't know what motivates him. Maybe he's ready to get on with his professional career. Gonna have to ride the busses eventually, maybe he wants to go ahead and get started. Or maybe he's in love and doesn't want to leave his girl early. Or maybe he's a great student and is scheduled to graduate in 3 years. I don't know any of these guys or their goals or priorities. So it's really hard to predict.
But yeah, Bear and Griffin are absolutely the most important draft eligible guys whose decisions will have the greatest affect on next year's team. I think Jump is gone, even though he still has 2 years. Injury is just such a concern for pitchers. You put together a healthy season, big temptation to to capitalize on that and not take chances. Especially when he's had a recent history of injury. We'll be interesting to see what everybody does.

Herring has been awesome but he will really want to leave lsu if he goes. He does not have the prospect status to really cash in.
Neither are your usual DES threats.

I agree and there was something like the average DES who signs is around 75 overall. Neither player strikes me as someone who will take below average slot so it would really need to work for both sides.

Herring has to work on a 3rd pitch and prove he can get through a lineup 3 times if he wants to show he can be a starter and improve his draft stock. If he doesn't do that then he is what he is at this point. He can be, and is, a really good college pitcher with what he has now but with only 2 pitches and not having upper 90s velo, I don't think he gets very far in the minors without gaining some type of 3rd pitch.

According to 6-4-3 charts he has the fastest bat speed. I have no doubt a MLB team will see the size, frame, natural power, and think they can make the necessary swing adjustments to make him a monster hitter. Dude has already improved his vision / chase % drastically this year compared to last. Something that I think Jay Johnson doesn’t get enough credit for.

No chance he is back.

Well he has 2 years of leverage, even if he stays another year he will still have leverage in the next draft.

Where? Everything I've seen posted in the last couple weeks has been around 7-8th rd

You people? People with hobbies other than recognizing distinctions between pitches and a batter's success rate against these various pitches?
Yeah, those darn normal people with more fulfilling lives and families... IDIOTS!

again, most of his success has come from mediocre pitching. it matters. swing speed is not a make it or break it deal. Tanks throws his barrel instead of hitting with his wrist, that doesnt translate well to MLB. Those guys have ungodly breaking stuff, Crews could hit it, its what made him special.... Bear wont touch it...

People saying he’s 100% leaving are dumb. Dude just learned how to hit a curve ball. He’s barely batting over .300. He was basically Travinski ladt season. If I know Jay he’s gonna point to Crews and White as examples as to why to stay. Plus the way this year went I could see he wants to come back as one the leaders of the team next season and make a push to Omaha. I think Jay is about to kill the portal this off season and be highly motivated becauase of how the season went. Last time season ended early in Hatttisburg. He got White and Skenes.
We have some really young hitters with major potential. Milam, Brown, Larson, Frey, Neal, etc
We shall see

.290 isn’t top 3-5 rounds. Another year with Jay he’s gonna smoke and prob hit close to .350 and 25-30 HRs
Posted on 5/16/24 at 2:51 pm to StevieG504
Well Tommy is hitting .284.

MLB.com has him as the 116 overall prospect. While prospect ranking and draft stock aren't quite the same, at this point in the process it gives you an idea.
116 overall falls in the 4th round this year. Like I said, it isn't quite linear because of signability and also you never know how a specific team might view him.
