It’s the same response one always gets when embarking on a weight or fitness plan; “ are you sure about that man, do you think that’s good for you man, I don’t know about that man it doesn’t sound safe”. All the things people say to subconsciously keep people in the status quo that is already killing them.

These drugs work. People get on this drug and get off 3 others. There are side effects. Just like with the meds they were already taking. There will likely be unknown side effects . Releasing a hormone that kills noise in your stomach and brain will likely have all kinds of mood/ psychological/ addiction- related/ compulsion-related effects. As always they will likely be good and bad.

I think the negativity towards obesity is that it’s an outward reflection of bad choices. It’s the result of poor self control, laziness, lack of pride, gluttony, and a myriad of of other negative traits.

If obesity was an immutable characteristic such as hair color or height, people would be much more understanding.

But when some miracle drug comes out that allows people to lose weight, but the person who takes it is just looking for a shortcut and are not willing to actually fix the negative behaviors that got them to where they are, it rubs people the wrong way.

If someone has a serious weight problem and just cannot shake it, I don’t think anyone has any negative feelings about them getting medical help. But if someone is just looking to take a shortcut because they can’t stop eating a bunch of junk and don’t want to get off their arse, then I think it’s completely natural to feel a bit of contempt towards those people.
