Good for him. He’s right about everything he said. Not a damn thing he said was incorrect.

Telling women they've been told it's a diabolical lie to pursue a career during their commencement speech is ridiculous.

That’s not what he was implying. The diabolical lies include that being “only” a homemaker/SAHM is unworthy/unfulfilling, and that titles/promotions will bring more joy and fulfillment and are more important than a family.
He was also talking specifically to women at a conservative, Catholic college. Many/most of whom have a primary (not sole, but primary) goal of being a wife/mother and many who likely would want someday down the line eventually to be a SAHM/just a “homemaker”, and he was emphasizing that’s okay, even if the world says it’s not. He actually was the commencement speaker at Georgia Tech the year before and talked about the importance of marriage/family and putting that over career, too (including for himself). It had a lot of the same message but the delivery/points of emphasis was different at Benedictine than GT, because he catered it to a different audience.
(I would also venture to guess - to be fair - that he does believe it’s better for the development of children to have a traditional nuclear family structure, with one dad who makes the money, and one mom who’s a SAHM. But I also do not think he was saying that women can’t/shouldn’t be allowed to pursue careers at all if that’s the path they choose.)
I don’t agree with Butker on 100% everything, there were definitely some moments of the speech that were odd and I think delivery/presentation most certainly could’ve been better and clearer, but your post illustrates how out of control this has gotten with people who don’t understand his message (particularly in the context of the school he was delivering it at).

The thing is, your description of his beliefs (which was thorough and well explained and honestly appreciated) and how he arrived to them is a very good example of an uncompromising pursuit of religious ideals, or zealotry.
And he was speaking at a Catholic institution.
Presumably the reason he was asked to speak is he is a locally famous person with devout Catholic beliefs.

It's strange how seemingly intelligent people make the same basic remarks as a hyper-Feminist so quickly:
"He said it's diabolical that woman want jobs!!"
No, not in the slightest. But that's par for the course for anti-religious sentiment, and that's generally what it is. Misinterpret it to react and create division and enemies. It's why I am sensitive to so quickly call him, and anyone who believes what he believes, a zealot.

He’s a Catholic who said Catholic things at commencement speech for a small Catholic university. Regardless of how you feel about what he said it’s stupid to get upset about it. Especially since the thing that people are most upset about (that women should all be stay at home moms) wasn’t even one of the things he actually said. He said most of the women in the crowd (presumably nearly all Catholic) will find their greatest meaning and purpose in being a wife and mom. And in my experience that is true for most women, religious or otherwise. That includes women who also work. And it’s biologically self evident why that would be the case.
My wife and I have three kids, aren’t religious and she will tell you she derives far more pleasure and meaning from being a mom than she ever did in her career prior to having children. She has a masters degree and lucrative skill set, life would be easier financially if she still worked but both her and the kids are happier that she doesn’t. That is by far the more common scenario than the inverse, where women with kids still find more pleasure and meaning in their career.
Hes basically saying don’t sacrifice a family at the alter of your career. If you can do both fine, but most women will find themselves unfulfilled later in life if they renounced marriage and children for their work. Thats just the reality of human biology.

But again, that’s not what he said. The “diabolical lie” is that most women can live their best, most fulfilling life without a long term intimate partner and especially without children. That is simply not the case for most women all all research on this topic supports that. Women who delayed or sacrificed starting a family for the sake of their career OVERWHELMINGLY regret it by their mid-30s and the percentage that regret it only goes up from there. For women post-menopause who never had children of their own choosing, over 90% regret it. Rates of anxiety, depression, suicide are all higher in these women and they have shorter life expectancies.
It is a fact beyond all coherent dispute that women who choose their career over having a family, or who disproportionately sacrifice time with their kids for their job, overwhelmingly regret it at some point in life.
For MOST women, it is a lie that you can be a boss bitch who don’t need no man. Many women can and do wear multiple hats, but very few find more happiness with their career.

and the biggest of biggest lies is telling women they should NOT want to be mothers and wives and SHOULD prioritize a job. Butker's point was never feel bad for wanting to be a wife and a mother more than anything else. There is nothing with that.

I have zero problem with any of this
If you make enough money where your wife can stay home with the kids do it, especially from birth till early teens.

What is funny to me is I said a particular statement in his speech was ridiculous, so are you saying I must agree to even though it was asinine?
I mean you yourself said the speech was odd and there were some points that he poorly articulated so I don't understand the beef or issue with me saying something in particular was ridiculous.
I understood his message but for me to tell people, in this case he was very specifically addressing woman, that worked hard to get a chance to graduate and relish in their accomplishment and achievement that they have been told a diabolical lie is absurd - if his message is that it is ok to choose family instead then you say that; especially when you say prior that the men and women in attendance can essentially be what they want to be and by living out their vocation they will enlighten the world.
I take no issue in your response but respectfully I don't see it the same and thought it was very tone deaf considering that are women biologically that won't fit the mold (incapable of having kids, not hetero, etc.)

The only people making this a big deal are the feminists on TikTok and the media. Butker was speaking to a crowd of Catholics at a Catholic college graduation, and hasn't been going around town parading his beliefs like people obviously want him to because they want the controversy.
