I’m not sure what you’re saying. Just because both like to handle the ball doesn’t mean they have overlapping strengths. Instead I would argue that Trae is a 3 pt shooter and Zion is paint scorer. I mean they’re a really good match.
In a lot of ways I agree with you. Offensively they are a good enough fit to be a really good offensive team. I mean, could you image running a pick-and-roll with Zion and Trae, Trae hitting Zion on the short roll and letting him attack downhill with an advantage to either finish or let him show off his passing?
What I am suggesting though is that they are not such a perfect fit that it would be worth the deficiency on D, the cost to acquire Trae, or the amount we would have to pay Trae.
Trae is not an off-ball player. This last year in ATL showed that. You say he’s a 3 pt shooter, but he has shot close to 70% of his 3s off the dribble in his career.
He wants to be THE system, which is still pretty good. Trae with 4 other average offensive players can still produce a top 10 offense. Trae fits extremely well with Herb, Trey, Dyson, and Hawk. But he overlaps with what Zion’s best attribute is: point-Zion. Nothing that has leaked out from ATL the last couple years gives me any confidence that Trae would buy into point-Zion
