re: It's alarming how few of the OT can discern a staged fake skit/bit vs real life.

The editors for these shows I think got included into the writers strike settlement in 08 or whenever because they said they created the story from the raw footage. Also I think the producers steer the story by the questions they ask or how they ask them.
