Reporting its financial performance for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, sales in the Digital Entertainment segment, which includes video games, rose by 2.6% but profit fell by 15.8%. This despite the sale of Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Foamstars, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Specifically on HD games, the subcategory Square Enix uses to encompass all the above games, the company saw a significant operating loss of ¥8.1 billion (approximately $51.9 million).

Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth both launched as PlayStation 5 exclusives, and while Square Enix has announced a sales figure for Final Fantasy 16, it has yet to do so for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second game in the company’s trilogy of Final Fantasy 7 remakes. In its financial report, all Square Enix would say is it has suffered from an “incomplete journey to better profitability in HD game development”, and that it had “launched many titles but some failed to live up to profit expectations, especially outsourced titles and some AAA titles.” It seems likely Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, at least, is included in that.

quote:

In response to the tumbling profits, Square Enix announced what it calls “Square Enix Reboots, and Awakens”, a three-year plan for rebooting for long-term growth. This involves a rethink across all parts of the business, but the highlight is a “shift to a multiplatform strategy." Square Enix said it will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.” Note the wording here of “Nintendo platforms”, with Nintendo set to announce its Switch successor console before April 2025.

As part of this multiplatform push, Square Enix said it will "build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles." The suggestion in all this is mainline Final Fantasy games will ditch PlayStation exclusivity going forward, although Square Enix has yet to announce specifics beyond Final Fantasy 16's upcoming launch on PC.

There’s also a shift from quantity to quality, Square Enix said, and a bid to deliver “ensured fun.” Square Enix has been accused of pumping out too many Final Fantasy games in too short a timeframe, so perhaps this means the release of major Final Fantasy games will be spaced out a bit more.

Overall, it’s a tough time for Square Enix, which had already absorbed ¥22.1 billion (approx $140.9 million) in what it called “content abandonment losses” ahead of today’s financial report. Square Enix did not name the canceled or rescoped in-development titles.

This isn't a surprise. They've been publicly lamenting their relationship with PlayStation for quite some time now.

With the changes being made to Lara Croft by the "powers that be", maybe Tomb Raider being cancelled is not a bad outcome.

I will never understand third party developers exclusively getting in bed with one console or another. Put your games on as many platforms as possible as long as the hardware can run the damn software.

Square Enix sold the IP (and Crystal Dynamics) to Embracer a few years ago.

Been living under a rock? They've been saying this for over a year now and it was mentioned in earnings calls for multiple quarters in their FY 2024 (which ended in March). Was discussed during the FTC trial against the ABK deal. They also talked about this when they announced a new game at the Xbox developer direct earlier this year, which was a clear message to anyone paying attention.

I have been talking about this since the ABK trial. You don't have to believe I know what I'm talking about, but I'm going to keep being right.

So a link shouldn't be too much of a problem, then.

Good, should be easy for you to produce a link then

Yep, you've been parroting that line for months and have never provided a link when asked. I've done my own googling too, I'm not just being lazy. Can't find a single comment or document that validates your claim

Keep telling yourself that bud.

All I want is Square to continue making good FF games. Don’t care if it’s on every platform. Whatever keeps the business running and FF games hitting the market.

I was pumped to see XIV on Xbox as I want that game and community to continue to thrive.

FF should be multiplat. Historic franchise with such appeal should have universal reach

Unfortunately that ship sailed a long time ago. A Realm Reborn is a real diamond in the rough, but outside of that, Final Fantasy has been a mess since like 2001.

I liked 12 a good bit, but I wish they would have released more games iterating on that formula instead of completely reinventing the wheel with each new release.

SquareEnix probably shouldn't have sold off all their western studios. Other than Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, they no longer have any big name franchises. I would say Dragon Quest, but Dragon Quest 12 along with the HD 2D remake of DQ3 seem to be in development hell. DQ3 HD 2D may be out right cancelled at this point for all I know.

12 was great even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of its story. Just FF Star Wars.

I will have to disagree about no good games since. Other than 15. I really disliked 15 at launch and have no desire to revisit it even with the patch work.

13 is a solid game. It’s got great visuals, soundtrack, and combat(like a faster paced 12 with the gambits etc). It is liner but so is FFX. Its story and characters are eh. But I enjoyed the game as a whole.

16 wasn’t my favorite but I think it was still an 8/10 experience.

7 remake series has been some of Squares greatest work imo. Best since X imo.

I think I read that fortunately most of toriyama’s work on 12 was in the can before his passing. But that does bring the question of the future of the franchise with one of the biggest parts of its creation no longer around

I knew I'd catch a bunch of Sony fanbois when I stated simple facts anyone who pays attention to the gaming industry would have known independently.

This board is nothing if not completely misinformed.

January 1, 2023 New Year's Letter from the President of Square Enix

quote:

On the publishing side, we are moving away from the previous geography- and function-based model under which our Japanese and Western publishing organizations operated independently of one another. Instead, we are creating an end-to-end global publishing organization based on the concept of “One Square Enix.” We launched this new structure late last year with close cooperation between our two Chief Publishing Officers (CPOs), a newly created role. We undertook especially thorough changes to the organizational structure of our Western operations, adopting a sales and marketing structure optimized to match the new studio portfolio created by the divestment of our three overseas studios. We are expanding our functions so that we can capture as much of the upside as possible from the digital shift that has been gaining momentum since the outbreak of the pandemic.

I know some idiot here will say "that doesn't specifically say they're moving away from exclusive deals," but that would show a very shallow intellectual capability. If Square Enix was going to move to one process for all games, they would either have to adopt a process for just one console exclusively for every game or adopt a process for all consoles together for every game. Given their recent earnings calls, it seems clear PS exclusives aren't working for them. This is obvious to people who know how to read and understand without being blinded by fandom.

World premiering Visions of Mana at the March 2024 Xbox Developer Direct was a clear sign of things to come. Anyone being would have recognized the message being sent. That followed the announcement last year of FF14 going to XBox.

December 26, 2023

quote:

An encouraging development for Square Enix is the recent commitment from the CEOs of Square Enix and Xbox to 'partner more closely.' This suggests that future Square Enix games will be more consistently available on Xbox, a shift from past practices. Notably, games like FF7 Remake and FF16 did not initially arrive on Xbox, representing missed opportunities for increased revenues due to limited exposure in the Western market.

July 28, 2023

quote:

here's what Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu had to say:

"As CEO of Square Enix, we want to continue to deliver fabulous games to fans across the world, and of course we want to welcome the Xbox community as well, and starting with today’s announcement of Final Fantasy XIV coming in Spring 2024, and whenever possible, we are planning to bring our games to Xbox for players around the world to enjoy. We’re really looking forward to working closely with Phil and the Xbox team to make this possible."

Next time do your own research. Or, better yet, just start paying attention. This has not been a secret. It has been obvious and they've been telling you this is coming for some time now.

This is a perfect microcosm of your posting. You have this incredible ability to draw ridiculous conclusions from statements and then act like everyone is a frickin moron for not agreeing. What a brilliant breakdown of that passage - Square details an internal restructuring that they're undergoing and you somehow twist it into "Square is clearly publicly lamenting their relationship with Sony." LMAO get real dude

This is comedy coming from you. Hysterical that THESE are the quotes are what you come back with a day later to try and prove your point.

Ooooooh yeah, I'm sure all 8 Visions of Mana fans were fist pumping at this knockout blow to Sony

All this to say "more consoles to sell to = more potential sales." Groundbreaking stuff.

I did my research. Nothing to be found regarding the "public lamentation" you mentioned in regards to Sony. The drivel you posted above may qualify in your deeply deluded mind, but it doesn't past the smell test for people with >100 IQ. Keep drawing these retarded conclusions from benign press releases so we can keep laughing at you

What HAS been obvious is Microsoft's complete ineptitude in regards to gaming for the last decade and the colossal fail that Gamepass ended up being. All those posts you've made about its profitability and sustainability, yet they're about to throw in the towel. Obvious busted business model from Day 1

quote:

"The PlayStation 5 shipped 4.5 million units in the last quarter. According to our estimates, this is almost 5x more than the Xbox Series X|S shipped in the same period." - Daniel Ahmad on Twitter (Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners)

quote:

More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. While it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

Keep simping for the only game company that can't get their shite together.

You'll be a lot less surprised when you figure out that I understand the gaming industry better than you do.

I get it. That stings. You don't like it.

But it's true.

You're a Playstation fanboi hack who plays "neutral" but really just simps for Sony at every turn. You aren't fooling anyone.
