And Jerry Jeff Walker was the one who drove him to Key West.

Jerry Jeff was a mentor to Jimmy in the early years. Buffet ended up in Nashville as a singer-songwriter at one point primarily because he was following Jerry Jeff.

Then Jerry Jeff moved to Cocoa Beach, and Jimmy made a trip to Florida to hang out. That’s when they made the trip to Key West.

They both bounced around on the Gulf Coast touring circuit playing college towns and cities. Jerry Jeff ended up settling in Austin and helped establish the Outlaw Country movement there, while Buffet settled in Key West and built his own movement.

There’s a lot of myth and legend spun in with the true stories that most certainly could be intertwined into an enjoyable documentary or bio pic.

The struggling young artist of the 60s and 70s, who turned into a corporate mogul himself, could be a bitter, sweet spin on a story. I get that, but they could always wrap it up with the look back toward the nostalgia that connected so many people at his concerts.

They really were fun times.
