From a tactical standpoint Russia would have to expend millions of tanks to take Ukraine at the current rates. I used to think they would eventually muscle their way through but I am not sure they can. Even if they did what would be left?

People were surprised, expecting Russia to roll through Ukraine like we did Iraq. That was never going to happen.

Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, and inherited a lot of the same gear the Russians are using. So a lot of this is like vs like. Add to that the Ukrainians don't want to go back under Moscow in a big way, and the Russians didn't intend on burning it to the ground, and you get what we see- war by attrition. And Russia is winning that attrition, they have the numbers to grind this out if they want to; and they seemingly want to.

Sure if this was just a math problem in a vacuum. But the truth is this war just needs to stay in place bc Russia is attritting Ukraine of men and the West of military resources and political will. The Ukrainian defenses are buckling badly and when the wall comes down not much will be behind it so thats where your hypothesis dissolves, that in the fact that Russia doesnt want the western 2/3 but maybe Odessa.
