A Virginia school board voted Friday to restore the names of Confederate military leaders to a high school and an elementary school, four years after the names were removed amid nationwide protests calling for a reckoning over racial injustice.

In a reversal experts believe was the first of its kind, Shenandoah County’s school board voted 5-1 to rename Mountain View High School as Stonewall Jackson High School and Honey Run Elementary as Ashby Lee Elementary.

Friday’s vote reversed a decision by the school board in 2020 when school systems across Virginia and the South were removing Confederate names from schools and other public locations in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Southern VA.

I was hoping they were restoring JEB Stuart HS, which I used to live right behind. But, that's Fairfax Co. so probably not gonna happen.

I’m genuinely surprised anyone cares what random schools in some other state are named. I care just as little that they were ever renamed to begin with.

Unless the school is called frick off academy or adolf hitler high, why do people who have nothing to do with these schools care what they are called?

I’m not surprised you can’t articulate why anyone should care what random schools in Virginia are called.

Because they are named after our people. Men who led our ancestors into battle, ok?

Ok.

But if we’re trying to MAGA, these men were trying to destroy America, or at least weaken her gravely by splitting the country up, and were happy to kill anyone who wanted to keep the country in tact.

Stuart Didawick of Edinburg stated that those critical of restoring the names did not represent the true opinion of those who live within the school district, nor are they connected to the culture that defines the communities and the schools.

"Will you listen to the opinions of woke outsiders who, for the most part, have no ties to the land, history and culture of this county or will you listen to the voices of the people who elected you to represent them?" Didawick asked. "The people whose families built and have sustained this county for generations. We are the majority."

Carter Heishman, a three-sport athlete and member of the FFA at Mountain View, expressed pride in the school's name.

"I stay very active, and I'd like to wear a name I am proud of," he said. "Not only do I want to have my FFA jacket say Stonewall, but I would also love to have my jerseys say Stonewall, which I wear year-round."

Following the meeting, those attending left in disparate moods.

"I'm ecstatic," Dorian Langston of Mount Jackson said. "It's our heritage. You can't erase it. You can't keep tearing down statues and changing school names."

The Confederacy as it's own country would be a significantly better country than America is now.

Or they were defending their vision of America? A country that was still an infant?
