Protective orders were supposed to be available to people (mostly women) who were suffering from physical or sexual abuse. You lose gun rights if you have a PO against you. You can suffer both a contempt finding and a criminal case if you violate them.
Unfortunately, trash now uses them to referee disputes that clearly do not merit the use of protective orders. In this case, the Judge should have immediately recognized that you can take a picture of a public figure under the circumstances described. The temp order should not have been granted. Women use them to try to get child custody resolved. You see a lot of them filed over some facebook dispute that is going back and forth.
PO's can be filed without paying court costs (and without lawyers). Thus, they have become a free weapon for the trash to use. These frivolous protective order applications invariably make the legitimate ones seem less important.
As an aside, even legitimate protective orders should have a provision where the victim cannot contact the defendant while the protective order is in place. Local guy here gets a call from the beauty salon where his wife works. He returns the call, gets hung up on, and gets arrested for violating a p.o.
