What is your opinion of where this might be….a 3in strip of white chalk?

Are you serious? It’s not an opinion, there are lines on the field. The running lane is 3 feet wide on the foul side and extends halfway between home plate and first.

rather than an opinion, I will once again copy and base from the ACTUAL RULEBOOK

in between the baseline and a line 3' to the foul side of the baseline

here, I circled that line for you on the diagram of a baseball field found in the official NCAA rule book

stepping to the outside of either of those 2 lines (even if with only 1 foot) is by definition outside of the running lane

quote:

Note 2: The batter-runner is considered outside this 3-foot lane if either foot is outside either line.

here is the only exception to that rule (none of which apply to this particular instance)

quote:

Exception—The batter-runner is permitted to exit the three-foot running lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base and for the sole purpose of touching first or attempting to avoid a tag. They may exit the running lane on their last stride or step if they have been running legally within the running lane up to that point.

It’s not n opinion. They caulk the field for a reason. The runners lane is there for a reason.
