I retired Dec. 26, 2023
4 months later working again, part-time
I was busy on my own and not looking for work.
It found me.
A guy knew my work ethic and offered - accepted.
Great hours, good work, solid people, very reputable company.
Life is good.

I think it happens a lot for couples with a bit of an age difference. My wife and I aren't that far apart in age (little over 4 yrs), but she'd have to get on my insurance if she wants to retire early.

But someone retiring and jumping on the spouse's insurance while said spouse has to continue working for 13 more years just to jump on federal health insurance?

No.. regardless of finances.. sleep when you want.. poke around the yard….
First thing I did was think back to when I was a pre teen.. before alcohol.. cars etc.. and said what did I like best about those years because man they were great.. I do a lot of the same.. bike ride.. walk in the woods..goofy hobbies.. rock stuff.. plants.. started learning carnivorous plants.. life is good.. travel some but I did a lot of that for work.. I do domestic and nature but my wife usually will do a Europe trip with others..

I’ll find out end of the year. I’m a little worried about that. I do enjoy being around my coworkers. I’ve worked with some of them for 40 years. We’re all good friends now. But it’s time to hang it up and let the young people do their thing.

I retired 8 years ago from a high speed job. I was bored out of my mind. Took a job in my field that has turned out to be a low speed, I'm happy. When I retire again I will not be as bored. Going from 100 to 0 was the problem.

Find a hobby if you don’t have one already.
That or maybe do something else part time/get a side gig.
I say this because there’s a worrisome statistic on men who retire dying early.

The key is having the freedom to work because you *want* to work, not because you *have* to work..
I do a few projects a year and this summer we're transforming my son's old room into a sports museum. I've got just about every type of item signed and we finally put together the sketches of where we're putting up shelving, framed jerseys/pictures/etc. along with paint colors. I have loved working with my boys on the plans.

This is a good question op. Yes it happens within 6 months so what you have to try and do is get your feet in something else you love or is a good possibly investment (real estate maybe) so you still have some responsibility and can actually possibly make more then when you actually freaking worked. Trust me on this one.
You are smarter now then when you were young simply because of experiences you have had in life and your work life. It’s a great resource.

Golf: I play around 150 times a year working. I’m off one day a week already.
Side gig: going to keep it going for now. It’s just one day a week and not too stressful.

I have been retired about 6 months now. Move from Louisiana to Tennessee. My kids are here. Love sleeping late somedays. Some days I am up at 7am. Love to cook so I consider that my hobby. Binge watching so TV shows that I either haven’t seen or have not seen in a real long time. Still stay in touch with a few of my past coworkers, especially during football season
