I’m a teacher. I work in a good school with smart kids and wealthy parents. The downside of this is every year I have between 3-6 students with lawyers.
I’m a few weeks from finishing year 25. Just five more to go. I may work after I hit year 30 but the knowledge I can walk away any day it becomes to much will become a relief.

There was a job in our company in another division I wanted, but there wasn't a position at the time. Got laid off in July of last year. They were fair with severance yada yada and I was going to retire at that point. Fast forward to November, I was contacted to see if I'd be interested in applying for a new position that was coming up. Things didn't move very fast, but eventually it all came together and I started in early February. Lower salary than before, but good enough for my objectives and I got to work with people I really liked. Prior to that, fantasy football (really) took a lot of my time back then (until the season ended). I did the exercise thing, we travel a lot anyway (I get 6 weeks a year anyway with other days off for holidays), so I didn't miss the travel part anyway. Nothing of interest otherwise to keep me busy. So, no I wasn't bored, but coming back for now works out for us as we have a kid's wedding to pay for, some future trips etc. Maybe I'll retire in a year or two?

It really depends on how much of your identity is tied to your job. I'm a teacher and have seen many teacher retire and thrive, by getting away from that stress, while others got very depressed after retiring and tended to start having failing health. Five years to freedom for me!

I interacted with the public my entire career. By the end, as I aged, I came to detest the public and people in general. The day I retired was one of the best days of my life. I’ve never regretted retiring for a second. Maybe I was always anti social. But I now spend my days doing things I like. I do not have the I need to travel bug. Take care of my property, help take care and spend time with my grandkids. Mind my own business and stay away from people. Best life ever.

When I signed the papers and walked out the door I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders, the happiest I’d been in recent memory. I never looked back and never once missed it. Like being released after a 42 year long sentence of doing something I had to do.
It’s been 5 years now and I’m still grateful to be free of that.

So you are going to retire and jump onto her insurance? Will you be up keeping the home and preparing dinner etc while she’s still working and paying for your insurance bc you don’t want to work anymore?

I've been retired for 22 years. I don't miss "work", but I do miss the interactions with many different people during my career.

I, too, will be retiring soon and I won't miss work, but I will miss some of the people. If you have a well thought out plan on how to fill in that time with meaningful activities, you will be fine I believe.

Been retired for just over 2yrs
I don't miss the "work" itself so much as interacting with different people - offices had the "car guys", the fellow AU alums, "gun guys", "sports guys", "jeep guys" etc so it was always fun to talk to different people on various topics.
I also miss having a better feel on what was going on in the field...
but retirement >>> work. Traveling, reading, spending more time with the missus (mostly good lol).

I’ve been retired for 3 years. I’ll be 64 next month. Not 5 minutes have I missed the job. Not 1 minute.
