Update 5/16: Shogun will compete in the Drama category of the Emmy awards and has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3

FX execs won’t let the end of the book get in the way of those ratings.

quote:

EXCLUSIVE: Hiroyuki Sanada, star and producer of FX‘s limited series Shogun, has closed a deal to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, sources tell Deadline. Securing Sanada, whose character’s journey to become shogun and lead Japan to an era of peace was chronicled in the 10-episode adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, has been considered crucial to any plan to extend Shogun beyond its original installment.

Other elements are still being worked out and deals are being finalized as part of an effort by FX to take Shogun to a second season in light of the big commercial and critical success of the limited series. The outcome of the effort would determine whether Shogun would be considered a limited or drama series going forward, which could have major ramifications on the 2024 Emmy race, with the timing of the decision tied to the deadline for Emmy submissions.

There was plenty of room for a sequel after the book. And the show was better

They literally said like 3 weeks ago there wouldn't be a 2nd season because the book ends

The real guy that Blackthorne is based on is an incredibly interesting person. There is definitely story to tell there

i wouldn't necessarily want a whole second season, but i'd like to see Toranaga's battle preparations, the war, and the end like the book.

maybe a 4 hour mini-series at most.

I enjoyed it. But I was expecting some big battles that never happened. Never read the books. Will definitely watch more.

They would have been better served making the book two seasons and taking their time.

I’m willing to give FX some grace as for the most part they’ve been putting out some solid shows in the last few years. This could be done well if they keep a lot of the folks who were involved with this season.

I had enough and don't really care. It'll be two or three years before it comes out anyway.

They could keep going after the 2nd season, because Toranaga can keep him there for years.

Concur. I want a little more closure, but I don't 8-10 more hours worth. Really don't even need more than one big battle scene/episode. The politicing was the most intriguing part, and rare for a show these days to focus on story over big CGI type battles.

Since Marino isn’t available for season 2, I say bring on more Fuji-sama

it is the best thing i've watched since early GoT, Mare of Easttown, or TD:S1.

I'm all in for this, but its going to be weird without Yabushige, even moreso than Mariko.

There's lots more to explore in the universe, if they do it right. Blackthorne's continued assimilation, the build of Edo into Tokyo, dive more into the Christian lords, larger-scale battles.
