Of course they are. That's where the bulk of the income sits in the US; between $50k and $200k.

I’d rather see the money be spent on something other than a lot of new IRA salaries, but I’m not worried about being audited. Why are you?

Who said anything about being worried about being audited?

You don’t have to be worried about an audit to think it’s fricking bullshite that they’re targeting middle class families.

easy solution, flat tax...

No Audits
No IRS Agents

Make the 47% of individuals who pay 0 dollars in federal taxes pay their fair share

You're a fool. You may have the utmost confidence in the accuracy of your tax filings and then you'll be shocked at the shite the IRS can find with their fine tooth comb.

Let’s not pretend the 87k new agents were only wanted by the Democrats plenty of Republicans voted for this as well.

We need to clean house in the Republican Party before we can focus on the Dems.

Small businesses where owners pull in under $200k in personal income are low-hanging fruit for the IRS and these same people are typically easy to intimidate if they aren't using a good CPA and/or tax attorney to help guide them on their investments in the business and how to properly manipulate the business to maximize LEGAL use of funds in certain questionable, but legal, strategies.

The IRS would love to go after bigger fish, but that won't produced immediate results. That takes years and lawyers and courts.

Joe's Landscape, Construction and Cleaning business, though, are pretty easy pickin's that'll bring in dollars, and this government needs dollars.

Audits are random... like if traffic stops were just based on "pull over every 25th car that passes today to make sure they are in compliance with everything, and make sure people know they could be pulled over randomly so they need to follow the rules." Airport security kind of works on that same premise, apparently... if you have TSA Pre-check you still get put into the regular line randomly when the computer hits a certain number of passengers (it happens to my wife for some reason almost every other time we fly) and someone told me even the Xray machine just tells them to pat down people on certain intervals when nothing gets scanned, just as a psychological thing to keep people in line.

But if you're an ambitious agent that wants to move up the chain, how do you do that? Probably by finding things to cite people on, right?

And the vast majority of the US falls into the "less than $200K households" so of course that's who will be audited the most. That's the group who will be most of any random selection.

There is a way to remove yourself from the audit pool... file an extension so you can file your return late. I was told this by an accountant... when I asked if they red flag people who file extensions every year, he said not that he has noticed.

this. most of the rich people didn't get there by paying the maximum amount of taxes.

send Joe Plumber a notice he owes an extra $5k and he'll make pay to make it go away. send Elon or Buffet that notice and he'll throw lawyers at it.

they didn't hire thousands of new agents to go after a few thousand millionaires. they hired them to go after easy pickings.
