Fox 8 Article

Oyster mafia, Nungesser, and Gordy Dove stacked; CPRA and the upper-mid Barataria basin fricked.

quote:

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority told senators it has already spent $422 million on the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion through planning, engineer and early construction.

Senators also suggested contracts with the main construction firms, Archer Western and Alberici, and sub-contractors could leave the state liable for between $250 million and $500 million.

“That’s a billion dollars, or $700 million, or whatever, right there, without the economic benefit of the project happening,” said state Sen. Gary Carter Jr., D-Algiers.

quote:

Work on the $2.9 billion project came to a screeching halt weeks ago when Plaquemines Parish government issued a stop work order.

quote:

Funding for the diversion comes from fines and settlements stemming from the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dove conceded it is not clear at this point whether the state would have to pay back the $422 million to the boards that administer those funds.

Senator Pat Connick, R-Marrero, pleaded for urgency in solving the issue.

“We’re gonna lose this money,” Connick warned. “All this money’s gonna go to damages, breach of contract and the citizens of the state are going to get nothing.”

quote:

Dove, a former Terrebonne Parish President, said he is reluctant to force a project down the throat of a parish government that does not want it.

“Being a past parish president, I believe it’s up to the parish to be satisfied.”

So basically all the folks involved are going to get filthy rich for doing nothing. and the greased in companies are also going to get a ton of money for breach of contract penalties. on top of that! the state might have to pay back money that was "free" to the state in the first place. So its a double dip special.

We really do get the government we deserve. Lets keep arguing about abortion and Palestine though!!

Landry should be impeached over this. He is allowing this to happen.

Then, in 5-10 years, this project will be kicked off again and the price will be triple what it is right now, AT LEAST.

I like how all of the sudden it is a problem for the parish. Like they didn't know the scope of the project years ago.

It is shockingly clear that whoever issued that stop work order is not worried about future generations. They are only worried about protecting their pockets now.

I really do hate this place.

Government created the problem building levees shooting all of the sediment out into the Gulf. Now hurricanes and erosion are free to bring the coast closer to New Orleans and Houma every day.

Houma has the most to lose if Terrebonne Parish stops this! Hell, it would be cheaper to subsidize the oyster farmers if any damage does occur.

That's 100% within the scope of the project. CPRA also has fund put aside to raise homes and construct any additional flood control so that the diversion will not cause homes to flood or affect flood insurance. A FEMA rep came out and said a few months ago that the diversion is unlikely to affect flood insurance prices.

It’s pretty amazing how bad Louisiana is at this type corruption. I've worked all over the United States, Louisiana was by far the most corrupt in dealing with yall's, "leaders."

Regarding the eastward migration of South Louisianians to Mississippi, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Welcome, but don't Louisiana my Mississippi with yall's politics, because Louisiana really, really really sucks at it.

Remember how Landry and Nungesser had a sit down to discuss their differences and concerns prior to Nungesser saying he would not run for Governor, and instead would run for re-election for Lt. Gov?

Pepperidge Farms remembers.

There are already hundreds of millions of dollars set aside in this Project to do just that. Its been accounted for.
