Is it that much of an upgrade? In 2016 I bought a oenmore series 100 w/d set for $600. Over the years it's just been me with the occasional loads from my gf. My current situation is the door lock switch is pretty much shot. That is an easy replacement. The big issue is the tub slams into the sides pretty violently. I do half loads and try to balance them but anything that will hold water is going to make it go crazy in the spin cycle. The suspension rods seem fine so I am not sure of the cause and at the point of calling someone.

This happened with literally THREE washers in a row for us before we got our SQ. The last one got to where it sounded like a CH-53 was taking off in the utility room. There seems to be a general design flaw in all of the big top loading, non-agitator style washing machines bc sooner or later they all fail the same way.

My mother and sister purchased this GE model at lowes. It has a huge basket for large loads and has worked flawlessly for both of them. When my smaller capacity washer dies, I am buying this GE model as well.

I've been preaching speed queen for 15 years on here.
Is the best by far.
Speed Queen washers are basically 1990s maytags with slightly better parts. They rarely break and when they do repairs are often cheap. I've never seen a speed queen be totalled due to mechanical failure.
.a dryer is a dryer there is little difference between dryers but in terms of washers speed queens are built to last.
VMW washers are almost disposable (whirlpool, kenmore, Amana)

I opted for a TC5 two years ago. Absolutely love it and have had zero issues.

Im going to repair and see if that helps. I believe it just needs new suspension rods and maybe door switch. If that doesn't work I'll give the tc5 a hard look

Curious why everyone is picking the TC over the TR?
The differences I came up with a couple years ago when I was searching:
1. TC agitator spins independently of the tub (It does clean better but very hard on clothes. Delicate womens clothes will breakdown much faster, but great for the hard workin dirty man jeans)
2. TC has "deep fill" (My TR fills all the way too, but maybe only on certain washes?)
3. TC has no lid lock. (bypassed my TR in 5 min)
4. TR has longer warranty
5. TR has bigger motor (0.5hp 2speed vs 1hp variable speed)
6. TR claims faster
7. Those knobs on the TC are NOT mechanical. They still connect to the same board as the TR.
Just curious....either way, cant go wrong with SQ!

TC5's 1/2hp motor is coupled to a transmission that has no plastic gears in it unlike the other models. The transmission is warranted for 15 years and a lifetime warranty on the wash tub assembly. 1/2hp is plenty for anything a 3.2 cu-ft washer will handle, my old Whirlpool is a 1/2hp and the motor doesn't struggle with anything. Also the TC5 has a direct-to-motor coupled pump unlike a separate electric pump of the other models, simpler and more durable design. The TC5 is closer to a real commercial-grade laundromat washer than the TR5 in the mechanical aspects.

TR models don't have a transmission at all. That direct drive is what makes it so much quieter. The transmission is what usually bricks a washer. Though to that point, the SQ transmission is on another tier from other washers so it's unlikely to fail. That 15 year tranny warranty is parts only year 4-15. Not bad if your willing to work on it yourself. For some reason they dont list the lifetime tub warranty on the TC5 but its listed for every other topload model. I'm sure it includes that.

No Speed Queen is a direct drive, the motor still works though a belt whether though a transmission or a clutch assembly that is controlled by a control board. Direct drive is when the motor is coupled directly to the transmission with nothing in between except a drive hub.

Given what most techs will tell, the transmission is going to be less likely of a problem than an electronic control board. The TC5 can be serviced as easily as any old-school direct drive, if needed. The transmission is why the TC5 only needs a 1/2hp motor because there is torque and speed multiplication as needed vs relying solely on the power of the motor.

About 2 years ago, I dumped a really expensive top of the line 3yo Samsung set (aka a POS) because I was fed up with it's "smartness"
