Who do you think are some of the most underrated songwriters in musical history? Who generally don’t get enough credit for their abilities?

I’ll start with a perfect example. Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The man was a true Southern poet. He never wrote anything down, the words came to him naturally and he could absolutely deliver. There are so many great examples of his work, “Tuesday’s Gone” “Simple Man” “Curtis Loew” and of course “Free Bird” to just name a few.

These songs were not pretentious, they were real down to the core. Ronnie wrote about real life the way he saw it and it has resonated with so many people. I just wish he would get a little more recognition for the incredible front-man/band leader he was and for the enduring songs he wrote.

Kostas. That guy wrote a lot of hits and nobody knows who the hell he is.
Must be awesome.

Damn right. Dude was incredible in general.
He probably seemed " too country" to some people, but those people are not smart enough to get him.
His grasp of the adventure and absurdity of life, off the charts. He kept on keeping on till the end.
Seems like he was very accepting of people's faults too and didn't write them off easily, he would keep working at them.
He probably was better at shop math than most engineers and a better carpenter, welder, machinist/mechanic, farmer and philosopher than 99% of those that are famous for those things.
He used that country demeanor to his advantage.
He never got filthy rich, but he was always himself.
What a great thing.
I wish I could have met him.

Probably exceeded both Lennon and McCartney after their breakup through the 70s.

I'd also add Mike Campbell from The Heartbreakers. He's responsible for a lot of their musical arrangements.

Great guitarist also.

Tom Waits. He is respected by many that know what's up, but the average person probably doesn't know much about him. He is one of the greatest songwriters ever as far as I am concerned.

I was coming in to post his dad for songwriter, but he's also a top-notch guitar player.

And he's not exactly underrated but I'm always amazed at how often I turn people on to John Prine.

Walked into the Gold Rush lounge in Huntsville one night and lo and behold there was Billy Joe and Eddie playing to nobody. I shite my pants first then called some friends to come there.
His son was absolutely shredding and we closed it down. Was fantastic!

CSB for real
Used to go there sometimes years ago.
One of my high school English teachers was a bartender there for a long time, heck she may still be.

Mark Knopfler probably doesn't get enough credit as a songwriter.

Absolutely. He could really pour his raw emotions out in a song. I miss seeing him live.

I'll add Bill Callahan.
